Arguments For Advertising In Schools

I do not think it is a good decision to allow companies to sponsors advertising at the schools in our district. Advertising on schools campuses could expose children to products that are unhealthy for them. Companies could also use contests at schools to gather demographic information on students and their families. Both of these practices could cause and interruption in the educational process at a time when students should be free of distractions.

Perhaps the most important reason for not allowing advertising on school campuses would be that this could expose students to products that are harmful to their bodies. The Coca Cola Corporation had made advertising deals with school districts in New York to advertise Coca Cola on the sides of their buses. After all the advertising and contracts were signed, it resulted in the school district only gaining three dollars per student in extra revenue. It is really worth tempting students to drink an unhealthy drink for a small amount of profit?

Others may say that contests are a fun way to engage students in the social aspect of school so why not have a little fun and possibly win a prize at the same time. Well, the problem with this is that advertisers use the demographic information gathered during these contests to target the appropriate audience to sell their products to. One school district used the Boxtops Program as a way to earn extra money for their school. During the promotion part of this program, a Cereal Company Mascot showed up dressed as the Trix Bunny to encourage students to eat their cereal. Should students be encourage to eat a product with lots of sugar just so the school can earn some extra

Children from a young age are being told what to purchase, from what they see on TV, online, or in stores. And though that's not okay for such young minds to be influenced, I don't think advertistements targeting children should be banned.
