Women in Combat
In the United States, equality is strived for, but what happens when equality becomes more of a political standard that bleeds into the aspect of American society that is rightfully separated from their civilian counterparts for the greater good? What might be right for the American civilian may be devastating for the American warfighter. For instance, it is debated that women shouldn’t be present in combat. For women outside the military, it was acclaimed as a step toward true equality. Before the current objectives were raised to justify keeping women out of combat units; almost all of those objectives were fallen within the last decade. The policy not only legalized sex discrimination, it also helped foster a hostile work environment in which sexual harassment and sexual assault have been allowed to thrive. Additionally, the Combat Exclusion Policy was one of the last remaining institutional glass ceilings for women, barring women from serving in career enhancing assignments and entering the tactical career fields associated with promotion to flag/general officer grades. In January 2013, the U.S. lifted its ban on women in combat and expect to have women training in those positions by 2016. In addition, at a press conference in the Pentagon Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and General Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that women had already proved themselves in action on America's battlefields and the move was simply a way of catching up with reality. The University of Sydney expert added: "The next battles for female soldiers will be ensuring that this policy is implemented effectively, stamping out any remaining sexist attitudes, and fighting to ensure that the military addresses its outstanding sexual violence
