Arguments Against Standardized Testing

During the last couple of years, schools around the US can be adding more standardized tests like Common Core to the education system. This year, many high schools have been guinea pigs for these new tests. Because of too many standardized test, it can harm a student’s education.
One major factor that standardized test can cause harm to one’s education is stress. With too much stress, students can’t concentrate when taught or studying, illnesses like stomach ulcers to depression are related to stress which could cause students to be absent for weeks, and are disgruntled. Stress also trigger students to be unhappy which could prevent them from liking or coming to school. For example, countries like Finland and Sweden have one of the best education systems on Earth. However, they don’t have standardized testing or homework and they pay their high school students to go* to high school. They ensure that their students are happy and willing to go* to school.

Since a part of the teacher’s evaluation is how well the students score, they are afraid to lose their jobs so they only teach what will be on the test. According to “Revolts Against High-Stakes Standardized Testing Spreads,” by Valerie Strauss, people are also instigating petition to these laws in multiple cities and states. Strauss states “… opposing the city’s [Chicago] plan for using student scores to evaluate teachers and students.” Many times, the teacher teaches the best that they can and stay after school for tutoring,
