Racial profiling is any action taken by police officers that is based solely on negative stereotypes about race, colour, ethnicity, ancestry, religion, place of origin, etc., rather than reasonable suspicion. The act of racially profiling an individual is a violation of rights under Ontarios Human Rights Code. Many interactions between black people and officers are considered racial profiling, some examples are; being followed or searched (this includes being strip searched), carding, excessive force or restraint, and arrest. Racism is a systematic issue embedded within the Justice Systems’ court processes and prison practices, as well as policing, it has been this way for decades. One factor that contributes to racial profiling is bias, which is having an opinion without full consideration of facts and information, as outlined in Unit 1 activity 2. The bias in this case is police prejudging and assuming that a black individual is doing something wrong, or they are “out-of-place”, also know as stereotyping bias. This kind of bias is embedded in the system and it would take a lot to change and great rid of this bias. One force for change however, is technology. In todays day technology Is so powerful and is a useful platform to spread a message, the message here is #blacklivesmatter, with the use of technology this network has been able to broadcast its mission all across the world and get all black communities and organizations involved, also known as globalization. I also agree with the suggested action needed to change police and profiling. I think it would help decrease the amount of racial profiling that happens, however, I don’t think it would get rid of it as a whole because its dependent on the person and how they view others and stereotype others which untimely contributes to the decisions they make and the action they (officers) take. Not only do I find bias to be a main contributor, I also believe that power plays a role. Officers have a lot of power and tend to abuse it because some of the decisions they make are not justified and they have multiple courses of actions they can take, such as arrest, restraint, taser, etc that intimidate the public to do what they
