Those people should think about if someone they loved had a condition out of their control, and performed an action that led them to be arrested, and what they would want for them. They would want their loved one to be cared for and assisted, not just punished. There are cases in which some felons made a conscious choice of whatever crime they committed, however even then psychological tests should be performed to find out what made them choose to. Many argue the idea that prisoners receive education while incarcerated. “Skeptics claim that, in many cases, prison education produces nothing more than “better educated criminals”(Federal Probation). However, many studies have shown significant decreases in recidivism. In fact, there was a study done by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, where they found that “the more educational programs successfully completed for each six months confined, the lower the recidivism rate”(FAMM). There are more benefits than negatives to offering education in prison. “Without effective intervention, we are merely postponing the time when prisoners return to drugs and crime”(FAMM). Many criminals did not have education as an option growing up, so by giving them the chance to earn their GED’s and other degrees, there are more opportunities for them to capitalize on when they are released.
