Pension spiking is hurting California and its localities with not maintaining costs. As taxpayers, we will be the ones to pay the shortfall in the budget under CA law. Sure, legislator and governor renovated public pension benefits for newly hired employees, but I think the legislation was too little and too late. The damage has already been done!
Some of the reasons public employees were given extra compensation was ridiculous. For example, some workers got additional pay for preserving a license they were required to have in order to do their jobs. Also, a police officer got paid more to attend fitness programs. Really! Like the billions of dollars underfunded to the University of California pension plan. As a result, tuition increases constantly and does NOT go towards education, instead pays into the pension system for retirees. As a current student, I am furious because I work really hard to pay for school, tuition just keeps increasing, and is so very expensive that it has become a huge burden for me at times.
Unions understood past abuses and truly believe they have learned their lesson in fixing the problems. In reality, I think they haven’t learned a darn thing! Because little improvement has been made. I think more frequent auditing needs to happen, a more detailed analyzation of all public employees compensation reports, and an aggressive reviewing of payroll records too.
