Arguments Against Medical Marijuana

Medical Marijuana In discussion of Medical Marijuana, one controversial argument has been whether the herbal remedies is being overprescribed and more importantly, whether it’s potential risks outweigh the benefit. Furthermore, it is said to cure many diseases starting from epilepsy and anxiety to cancer and diabetes, along with many more. Others even maintain that the price and its side effects play an important role in the use of medical marijuana. My own view is that medical marijuana is an effective treatment but when it comes to the question if it is safe, I wouldn’t have a solid answer to give. According to the author, Mitchell Earleywine, “Medicinal uses for cannabis date back to 2737 B.C., when the Chinese emperor and pharmacologist Shen Neng prescribed the drug for gout, malaria, beriberi, rheumatism, and memory problems” (168). Earleywine’s point is that cannabis has been used for a long time and has helped reduce symptoms. Cannabis or marijuana back then, cured a variety of symptoms and was adequate to be used for nausea, headaches, muscle spasms, and cramps. Earleywine also states that “smoked marijuana for brief interventions or as a treatment for the terminally ill has no more negative side effects than many other popular drugs” (171). In other words, Earleywine believes that medical marijuana is just as similar as taking prescribed or known medicine.
