Arguments Against Legalizing Prostitution

Improved Essays
In this paper I argue in favor of the prohibition of prostitution. Accordingly to Janice G. Raymond, an American lesbian radical feminist activist known for her work against violence, sexual exploitation and the "medical abuse" of women, gives a reason why prostitution should stay illegal, which is “…legalization/decriminalization of prostitution and the sex industry promotes sex trafficking.” In addition, from the article “Top 10 Reasons Prostitution Should Always Be Illegal”, they state that “…legalization does not prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.” Abolitionists disagree. They believe that prostitution is not intrinsically harmful, the difference being that one pays for sex. Also, abolitionists think prostitution legalization can actually reduce sex trafficking and benefit local economist. In the article, “Why Legalizing Prostitution Would Make America Healthier, Wealthier and Safer”, John Haltiwanger, is the Senior Politics Writer at Elite Daily, he says “…legalizing prostitution would greatly reduce …show more content…
In addition, Tan states that “…on average, countries with legalized prostitution report a greater incidence of human trafficking inflows.” I believe that what Tan is trying to say is that if prostitution legalization happens, it will create a much larger of inflows than prostitution being criminalized. According to Humantrafficking.org, Sex trafficking in America “is estimated that 14,500 to 17,500 people” which is mostly children and women “are trafficked to the U.S. annually” (Humantrafficking.org). How can people think it is right to traffic others and then forcing them into prostitution. Therefore, I strongly disagree on how people can know about sex trafficking and still want prostitution to be legalized. We should just keep it

But, one thing it was missing was the feelings of the sex trafficked victims. “The Wrong Cure for Sex Trafficking” displayed a peculiar opinion. The author wrote that “Nevada, the only state where sex work is legal, demonstrates how lifting prohibition makes prostitutes safer” (Weissmueller, 2014, para. 5). Although, Weissmueller states this, he does not support his opinion with real victims tragedies or acquirements, as does…

Prostitution has been dealt with differently all over the globe, from being a legal normality in Spain to being abolished and frowned upon in 49 of America’s 50 states. It’s a constant jump from, “it’s women using their bodies as they please, it runs along the same lines as running your own lemonade stand” to white republican men just wanting to control another minority. When you put all the facts together, prostitution being legal helps more than it harms. The most prominent issue of illegal prostitution is the astounding amount of STD’s and pregnancies. Prostitutes make up 6-8% of the world’s total of STD’s, but in a deeper thought, 50% of prostitutes have HIV alone.…

In America, the debate on legalizing prostitution is often centered on whether prostitutes are people of business or victims. Some believe they are business people, and some believe they are pushed to sell their bodies by forces that are beyond their control. Some of the most memorable arguments for legalizing prostitution, not surprisingly, come from prostitutes themselves. Forcing us to answer the question: why a man or woman cannot make moral decisions for his or her life and body or property , even if others find the acts not to their taste?…

Legalising prostitution under the right conditions, can reduce human trafficking. One example of this can be seen in Denmark; where legalising prostitution reduced human trafficking. If the government is the organisation in charge of regulating the sex industry, human traffickers have less power and control over the victims. When sex work is criminalised, it attracts large organised crime syndicates, which create huge amounts of profits (Weitzer, 2007, p. 457). Although legalising prostitution can reduce sex trafficking, it is not…

It is for this reason that legalizing prostitution could provide many countries with an economic advantage, for it would decrease the unemployment rate in those countries. Due to recent job markets being extremely limited in terms of job opportunities, many individuals are being let off work, and are unable to find jobs because there is a decrease in available vacancies. Therefore, considering prostitution as a career choice is something many have being doing for quite some time now, and for good reason, for prostitution is quite the lucrative business. Hence, if prostitution were legitimized, the stigma of being a sex worker would slowly decrease, and eventually, people would feel more comfortable pursuing this line of work, and this in itself would lead to an increase in employment. Similarly, when discussing the stigma that those in prostitution face, it is important to mention that if the stigma faced by prostitutes is lifted, it might facilitate the transition of those in prostitution to other lines of work, which would lead to an expansion in the non-sex work labor…

This will make the prostitutes happier because not only will they no longer need to fear arrest, but they will also be able to go to the police when they face a dangerous situation while working. Also, studies have shown that sex workers will continue to sell sex after being arrested. After an arrest, it would be even more difficult for these people to find legal jobs with a criminal record anyway (Nelson 3). If arrest does not help stop prostitution, legalizing it would be beneficial to the legal system. There would no longer be a cost of housing the arrested prostitutes and police officers could focus their time on more important…

Because many prostitutes were victims of violence or human trafficking as children, they did not get to receive the education that is necessary in order to obtain well-paying jobs. Therefore, if communities can set up programs that would allow people who were victims of prostitution to receive a high school or college education, they would be more likely to get jobs that would allow them to make money without having to be a prostitute. Communities can also create jobs for people who have been victims of prostitution and other sex crimes. Education and better career opportunities are two things that could help eliminate prostitution in our communities. Overall, I believe that human trafficking and prostitution are both social problems that put our country at risk.…

The Proof is available that nations that have legalized prostitution have fewer violent crimes as compared to those that have made prostitution illegal. Prostitution is considered the world’s oldest profession and has been around for many centuries. In the ancient world, prostitution was often sacred and the women who practiced it were considered goddesses in their times. In this century, our opinions of women and now men who pursue prostitution as a career have changed, and we no longer see it as secret, but something that is forbidden and frowned upon by many people around the world. Some of the many benefits of having prostitution being legalized would be taking prostitutes off the street into a safer place, increasing tax revenue for our city, and being able to contain the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. No one should have the right to be told what to do and what not to do with…
