The “War on Drugs” started in the 1970’s with president Nixon, since that time many people believe this has robbed children from their futures, while building a huge prison-industrial complex, it has caused countless casualties, wasted millions in taxpayer dollars, taken away basic human rights, and promoted discrimination (Walters, 2014). Basically, there is no wining this so-called war so, why not just make drugs legal and let the people make their own choices? Are drugs any different than alcohol and tobacco? If they were sold in stores then anyone could get their hands on them, not to mentioned the amount of kids that would start using drugs at a younger age. Drugs negatively affect kids in many ways, they have difficulty paying attention, lower IQ’s, they tend to do things they normally wouldn’t do had they not been using drugs, they can become permanently brain damaged, and it increases their chances of dying (Nida, 2016). Many health and behavioral problems drastically rise because of drug use. Your immune system becomes weak allowing an increase in infections, cardiovascular conditions such as erratic heart beats or heart attacks, it can affect all your organs, seizures and strokes, and brain damage which messes with your memory, decision making, mental confusion (Nida, 2016).
