Arguments Against Gun Control

With recent mass shootings in Oregon, Sandy Hook, and other schools and churches around America, revisions to gun control laws have been brought into question. Supporters of gun control argue that the Second Amendment only pertains to militias, therefore no one should own guns and that this implementation would reduce gun violence tremendously. As opponents of gun control would argue, common sense seems to dictate that illegalizing gun sales won’t prevent criminals from obtaining them. In addition, they believe that it is their right as American citizens to bear arms. Although many conservatives strongly resent the application of gun control laws due to the Second Amendment, some restrictions are needed to prevent criminals from legally obtaining guns. They’re afraid that gun control laws will give the government too much power. For example, radio host Alex Jones claims “[t]he Second Amendment isn’t there for duck hunting, it’s there to protect us from tyrannical government and street thugs...” (76). To put it bluntly, conservatives see the government’s implement of gun control laws as a way to further control the people of America. Although I agree that the total banning of firearms would breach our basic rights as American citizens while giving too much power to the government, I still insist that some restrictions are needed to prevent military-grade firearms from falling into the wrong hands. For instance, it is still legal in most states to buy high-capacity magazines, causing the death and injury rates of mass shootings to skyrocket (8).
