Final edit Euthanasia is the act of helping end a person's life to relieve suffering. There are solid debates on whether to make euthanasia legal in the United States. It is a way to help end the prolonged suffering of patients who are terminally ill or in an irreversible coma. Euthanasia should become legal because it will end suffering, it is less expensive, people should have the right to end their life, no one should be forced to stay alive, and the government should not have the right over people’s lives. If euthanasia was legal it would help end the suffering of many ill patients. For example there was this man named Richard Chinn. Under his chin were huge purple masses. Chinn was diagnosed with cancer. Those …show more content…
It does not make sense to continue spending money on medical bills for someone who is dying. The cost of drugs for Euthanasia would be only a mere $35.00. Patients fear being a burden to their family. They know it cost thousands of dollars to pay for their medicals bills. Families should not have to pay to keep their loved one who is sick and suffering alive. Due to the abundant amount of hospitalizations and the increased necessity for specialists’ attention, end of life care is extremely expensive. The patients who have terminal illnesses have even more obvious expensive health care needs. Understandably, patients in the final stages of a terminal illness are no longer in any kind of position to contribute economically to society. The patient’s continued life may be of value to those who love them. But from an economic viewpoint they are all cost and no benefit. In 2008, Medicare funded an enormous amount of $50 billion just for doctor and hospital bills for the last two months of patients' lives. That is more than the budget for the Department of Homeland Security or the Department of Education (The Cost of Dying). It costs up to $10,000 a day to sustain someone in the intensive care unit. Some patients stay there for weeks or even …show more content…
What the government should do is give people the right to decide on their own lives. Euthanasia not being legal has become such an issue that families go out of their way to go to court and ask for permission. That is a waste of time and puts more stress on the patient and the family. Jack Kevorkian, who is a pathologist said, “Dying is not a crime”. It is true; dying is not a crime, but the government is making it a crime. Euthanasia is not something that kills people against their will. However, it does involve assisting suicide, but it is not without consent. Valentina Maureira, is 14 year old Chilean girl suffering from terminal cystic fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease with no cure. It severely weakens patients by clogging their lungs and organs with thick layers of mucus. Valentina only weighs 77 pounds, relies on breathing machines, and is fed through a tube. Her request for euthanasia came after the death of another cystic fibrosis patient at her hospital a month ago. She is asking her country's president for permission to end her life. Valentina was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis as a baby. She recently posted a video on her Facebook page pleading for a meeting with Chilean President Michelle Bachelet. In the video Valentina said, “My name is Valentina Maureira, I am fourteen and I suffer from cystic fibrosis. I need to speak urgently with the president
