According to WHO (2002 a, b, c) elder abuse is a widespread concern, which affects geriatrics irrespective of economic status and this abuse can be exhibited in both the developed as well as the developing world (as cited in Donovan & Regehr, 2010). Statistics Canada shows that by the end of year 2021, seniors will comprise 19 percent of the total population which is almost 7 million and it will be 25 percent by the year 2041(Hick, 2010). As the percentage of older population is increasing steadily, there is a high demand on family to provide community based attention for the elderly which in turn will result in elder abuse as a major concern for social workers (Donovan & Regehr, 2010). In order to protect the elder from abuse, the Canadian government is trying to address the issue at the highest levels of policies (Hick, 2010). …show more content…
