Arguments Against Censorship

Even though censorship has occurred throughout history and is constantly, there has always been a similar reason for censoring others. Usually, censorship is used to not allow people to learn about other opinions than that of the ruling party. Governments or religious institutions are the most known parties that censor others because of books or other works that express views contrary to that of state or beliefs that seem threatening to their welfare (“Banned Books”). Some smaller authorities like adults ban works based off the inappropriateness for youth. Censorship is people trying to make others think one way, which is their way. They stop people from forming their own ideas that may differ from their own so they don’t lose their control …show more content…
People can be turned to a side or against a side with propaganda and censorship combined because they won’t know any better. People with power want to stop those that oppose their power. A new crisis with censorship is “hate speech,” which is whenever “anyone alleges that the expressions of others are insulting, offensive, or degrading, presumably those others could assert that the former's allegations are insulting, offensive, or degrading to them” (Laursen). People are calling for censorship of the words that they find inappropriate and classify it as hate just so it looks like it isn’t undermining freedom of speech. Freedom of speech is to allow people to express their ideas. We are free to not listen instead of making it illegal. The people with power only oppose censorship when it affects themselves, which is not often. Only people with power support antipiracy because they support censorship so they stay in power. Producers of copyrighted content want more money than they already have to only increase their power (“Stop Online Piracy Act”). They claim it gives less jobs to other people, but they could also take some from their own million dollar

Censoring Censorship When watching reality TV, it isn’t uncommon to see a censored gesture or word. The censoring is done for the good of the public, so the viewers don’t see or hear anything vulgar. But there’s another type of censoring that isn’t truly benefiting the public: the censorship of literature and language. While some books have been banned for years, the banning of language is new. By censoring language and literature in schools and elsewhere, students are being sheltered and many people are being deprived of the freedom of speech, even in our own state.…

The word censorship defines as blocking something from being heard, seen or read. I believe that there was a time that when censorship should be appropriate for the First Amendment. Although the First Amendment is about the free flow of information, ideas, and opinions that can be expressed in our society by responsible citizens, however, our government should be able to regulate the speech through the court consistently to determine if the government’s reason outweighs the importance of our democratic freedoms with ethical responsibilities. Censorship can also be an act of changing a message, including the change of deletion (complete removal of the message of the news or what was said), between the sender and the receiver. Censorship can be used for the good, by being ethically responsible.…

The youth of today is the society of tomorrow; raise them right, and the world will go on to be a better place. In order to do so, they must have a safe environment brought about by the suppression of ideas, words, or images that are generally considered offensive; this concept is most widely known as censorship and can be. Critically acclaimed, George Orwell’s 1984 is one of the most popular examples of censorship taken too far. However, 1984 does make a few good points when it comes to what should be hidden from public view. Some of the most common things censored are nudity and pornography, profanity, racial slurs, and other sensitive topics.…

There are also people who are for censorship. Many schools are feeling pressure to censor books because of new educational standards. In the article Education; Schools Feel Censorship pressure, the author talks about how schools are feeling pressure to censor their student’s education because of new educational standards. People are robbed of their free will, their free speech, and their right to assembly out of fear that they may begin to defy authoritarian powers. Censorship strives to keep people uninformed and uneducated in hopes that people will fall for political propaganda more easily and keeps the judgmental mind at bay. These results only seem to produce the opposite in some cases, as secret newspapers illegally make their ways into citizen hands and curiosity of the outside world increases. Finally, despite best intentions, there are circumstances when governments should step down and let writers’ content be content in hopes of generating a more aware public in terms of current issues. In conclusion, extreme government censorship is psychologically harmful to the public and should be extinguished as soon as possible, an act that is possible only if the public take matters into their own…

Censorship acts against our basic human rights. For example during the beginning of WW1 in the United States a man named Charles Schenk, “attempted to distribute thousands of flyers to American servicemen recently drafted to fight in World War I.” but, “Schenck was charged by the U.S. government with violating the recently enacted Espionage Act.” This shows that although Schenk was playing by the rules and simply expressing his opinion, he was censored regardless of his freedom of speech. Luckily for Schenk Society and the courts determined that this was a violation of his freedom of speech. So freedom of speech actually became the first basic right for Americans to actually obtain.…

Ever had to clean a room for guests by sweeping clutter under the couches or trashing it behind drawers? The exterior facade of furniture covers the mess, tricking the guests into thinking that they are in a safe, clean environment. Censorship is basically the couches and drawers that cover up the unwanted content from potential viewers. Simply hiding the clutter is taking the easy way out, pretending that the undesirable content is nonexistent instead of acknowledging it, or properly dealing with it. Censorship is the prohibition of potential offensive and injurious words, images or ideas.…
