Arguments Against Animal Research

Improved Essays
Many people are against animal research because they believe that it is under the category of animal abuse, but the results show otherwise. Each year, more than 1 million animals are used in experiments and there is an estimated 100 million mice and rats used for research as well. They are used for positive reasons biology lessons, medical training, chemical, food, drugs, and cosmetics testing. In a biological point of view, human beings are similar to species such as mice and rats because we share the same set of genes. Their bodies respond to disease and treatments just like human beings. Patients might not know that the powerful new drugs Avastin (for breast and lung cancer) and Herceptin (for breast cancer) were developed after research on mice. Animals should be used for research because it will supply numerous life saving treatments, they are suitable subjects for research because they are comparable to humans in multiple ways, and it is highly manageable, with laws to defend them from abuse. …show more content…
For example, The California Biomedical Research Association mentions that virtually every medical development in the last century that has resulted from research using animals. There has been procedures in which dogs had their pancreas removed and it eventually led to the finding of insulin. This is important to saving the lives of people with diabetes. This means that there have been studies that prove that all the medical discoveries made have been made from research on animals. In addition, The Polio vaccine had reduced the global phenomenon of the disease from 350,000 occurrences in 1988 to 223 in 2012. This was discovered by animals. It has also had a role in treating conditions such as breast cancer, brain injury, and other diseases. This means that animals played a big part in finding all of our common diseases that we know of

Animal testing has become one of a number of controversial issues because of the effects that it has on animals. Supporters of animal testing justify these effects because they believe that animal testing is the only way to find new cures for diseases. Research that has been done on this matter has proven it to be an ineffective way of finding cures. Furthermore, the reason why animal testing should not continue is because it leads to animals having psychological problems, dwindling of the number of endangered animals and cures that have been proven on animals do not work on people.…

Just as far as neuroscience goes, animal testing has revealed very significant results in the way of medical advances. Research done on rats an monkeys, for example, has helped us to better understand PTSD, and it is because of this better understanding that scientists have been able to develop medications to help people who suffer from PTSD cope with aspects of the disorder. Animal research has also been significant in understanding and helping to treat Parkinson’s disease. It was because of the research done on rabbits and mice that scientists discovered that Parkinson’s affects dopamine levels in the brain. Animal research is still important today when studying current diseases and disorders.…

Nowadays, more and more people are teaming up against animal testing. Laboratory testing is done on substances that make up medication and cosmetics, such as perfume, lotion, soap, etc. Animals are used to develop medical treatments, determine the toxicity of medications, and check the safety of products destined for human use. Substances are injected into animal’s bodies to prove that products are harmless to people, and the environment.…

When speaking of animal research, it is easy to see it as a morbid, more grotesque field. This is likely because it is easy to see the words “research” and “experimentation” as surgeries that are performed to see if something works and could usually result in death of the animal used in the experiment. However, this is not so, with much of today’s technology animal research and experimentation is performed when there is no better alternative and with medical advancements we can safely perform many experimental surgeries and procedures on laboratory animals. So then, why should we? Well over the past century the amount of progress made in medical treatments for many diseases is so great due to animal research that there are many diseases that…

Animals experimentations have been used for years to know if chemicals are safe for human use; some people say it's right to use animals because they don't feel pain like humans do, but other people say it's cruel and can be replaced by more humane practices. This shows how animals are treated, not good, some people care about animals lives. Since the 1800s and 1900s animal testing was right, finding out new technology. Now in present day there's more argues about it, killing about 100 million animals each year and spending 12 billion to 14.5 billion each year for animal experiments. The good things about animal testing, it's saving human lives and giving new knowledge and more information about cures and treatments for humans.…

The scientific community is strongly in favor of animal testing. They see humans are superior to animal life and this belief thus justifies the use of animals in testing. The medical breakthroughs that have occurred as a result of animal testing are also considered reason enough to continue the practice. Support is also geared at protecting humans, not simply producing new life-saving drugs-although this is seem as a priority. Animal testing is a important part of preventing a widespread disaster if chemical agents are released by another country.…

For example, many lifesaving cures and treatments have been discovered from experiments on animals, such as dogs that had their pancreases removed then later led to the discovery of insulin which saved lives of people who had diabetes (Animal Testing). In fact, many say that because we are so similar to chimpanzees it is easier to compare results when later used on people. Animals are major contributors to many of the products we use today, but many of the test conducted do not always show the same results when used on people. As said in the Quality of Animal Experiments article, “…animal models can be useful tools in biomedical research, but undoubtedly, it has been observed that the effects of animal models could not be translated to the clinic” (Martic-Kehl 2). Though these animals may seem like they are being taken care of when treated on, that is not the always the case.…
