Arguments Against Animal Experimentation

Superior Essays
Animals have been used repeatedly in the past for biomedical research, in recent years animal testing has been under severe criticism by animal rights groups. Laws have been passed in many countries in order to make animal testing more ‘humane’ but many argue that the benefit to humans is not worth the torture to these defenseless animals. Scientists William Russel and Rex Burch publish a book titled “The principles of Humane Experimental Technique” in 1959 where they expressed their concerns with animal testing. Due to their concern along with other factors it led to the Animal Welfare Act by the U.S. federal government in 1966. Although the act did not stop animal testing it did ensure that the animals received proper care. Animal experimentation should be halted wherever possible, especially in the field of science where they are subjected to such terrible treatment in the name of a greater good. Animal Experimentation is something people should speak more out about because of the harming of animals is not right the facts that are being put out …show more content…
Certainly, animals don't have the same abilities as humans. They can't talk, write books or drive cars, but neither can some humans. We don't ask how intelligent a person is before we decide whether to eat them or experiment on them. Regardless of intelligence, their life still has value to them. The Medical Research Modernization Committee, an American organization for doctors who are against animal testing, argue that AIDS research in America has been very unproductive. Animals being infected with HIV were not successful in developing symptoms quite similar to those humans develop when they have AIDS. Obviously if there are things that make us sick, that don’t effect animals there are going to be some things that make them sick but not us. Tests will always come back

(Engebretson 3) Animal testing may be beneficial in some ways; however it has not proven to be a completely accurate process as animal cells are much different than human cells. Animal experimentation should be banned because it is inaccurate, animal tests are more expensive, and it causes great pain and suffering to the animal on which the test is performed.…

Picture yourself being an innocent, helpless animal. You are being put into different rooms for horrific experiments. Doctors are touching you carelessly, while injecting unknown chemicals into your system. Within minutes, pain begins to take over your entire body, your heart begins to rise, and you ask yourself, what did I do to end up in here? Nobody understands you, then you look around and see other animals around you, and all of you are being treated equally wrong.…

Animal activists are trying to save animals and their rights. In a Youtube video from CNN, two anti-animal testing people and two pro-animal testing people had a debate if animal testing is necessary. Tom Holder spoke out that animal research has been able to save people with cancer and that people need a better understanding of it. Peter Young stated that animals deserve their freedom and have a brain just like humans. Cutting open animals is pointless and puts animals to suffer.…

The question “is animal testing for medical research acceptable?” has been a particularly controversial topic since experimentation on animals first arose. Although I do not wish to exacerbate a feud with an unforeseeable end, I feel that I am obliged to bring some points to light. On one side of the of the fence, animal rights activists wish to protect vulnerable beings who have no voice yet on the other side thousands of people are dying of possibly curable diseases. A common argument for the abolition of in vivo animal testing is that animals do not provide consent to bring tested upon: how would you like it if you were plucked from your home without your consent?…

Animal Experimentation Aside from agony and a shortened life, do animals get any benefit from being used for biomedical research? The use of animals for research goes back to Greek and Roman times. Biomedical animal experimentation has led to many cures for diabetes, antibiotics, polio, tranquilizers, etc. In 1966, the U.S. Congress passed the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) to exclude birds and certain types of rats and mice used in research. Many believe we need the use of biomedical research to find advances for future human health.…

In order to continue animal experimentation in the medical industry, animal rights need to be voted down, the uninformed P.E.T.A. followers need to be aware of what they are campaigning, and the critical role this type of testing plays far exceeds any amount of suffering animals go through. The results of animal testing have saved millions and will continue to save even more as long as animal experimentation proceeds. Animals used in medical research are vital to improving medicine for…

For many years, there has been a large amount of debate about animal research. It has become a massive worldwide problem when the subject matter of animal research is introduced. It remains a controversial issue because it is hard to decide what rights animals have, which is why the debate is still occurring. A clear solution to this debate is for the United State government to reevaluate the Animal Welfare Act that was passed in 1966, that protects animals from research.…

Most importantly is the fact that animals do not get many of the diseases that humans do including Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, or schizophrenia. Therefore, diseases have to be artificially induced in research animals, however, they will never be the same as the diseases that occur naturally in humans. The results of animal testing are misleading and do not improve human health. It only prolongs the discovery of effective cures for people who are suffering. It is proven that “Nine out of ten drugs that appear promising in animal studies go on to fail in human clinical trials” (American Anti-Vivisection Society).…

Often, when on the subject of whether or not animals should be used in animal research, it generally sparks up a debate. Some argue that animal testing does not work and the practice is cruel to animals while others argue that the use of animal research has produced tremendous medical breakthroughs and should not be stopped. Yes, animal testing has resulted in great medical discoveries and could be used to potentially discover more, however, new technological advances in medicine such as the 3D biomedical printer can eventually replace the need for animal testing and as a result of that cost of research will go down dramatically as well as animals will no longer suffer for no reason. There is absolutely no doubt that animal testing…

After studying multiple views on animal testing I have come to realize my personal view has now changed since the start of my research. Before undergoing heavy study into animal testing I believed that all types of animal testing should be stopped, but now I believe that the idea is very beneficial and should only be done when the rights of the animal are considered. In the coming years, hopefully, more regulations can be passed to ensure that all animal’s lives are protected during experimentation. Although most animals are treated with care and no pain is dealt to them when undergoing testing, it would be a lie if I stated no animals are harmed during the process. Animal testing is extremely useful in developing life-saving drugs and medicine.…

Though I concede that in some situations, animal testing may be useful, such as in immensely important medical studies, I still maintain that it is unnecessary to make an animal suffer and be discriminated against. Although some people may think that animal testing is healthy and beneficial to humans, I believe that animal testing is unethical and utterly wrong because of the unfair repulsive treatment that animals receive from scientists. This topic is important because the world we live in is as much an animal 's world as it is a human’s world and right now humans are discriminating and enslaving…

Research and tests on animals have been going on for many decades. “Animal testing dates back thousands of years; evidence exists that the ancient Greeks performed experiments on living animals as early as the third century BCE” (“Animal Rights”). There have been many laws enacted to protect the rights of animals. “The Environmental Protection Agency released five new policies in June that will reduce animal testing and improve safety assessments for pesticides” (“Five New EPA Policies Reduce Animal Testing”). Even though there are many laws protecting the rights of these animals, some…

Also, the fact that both animals and humans are extraordinarily alike and that they share the same diseases makes them excellent candidates for those kinds of tests [5]. Which, helps with delivering new medications to the health department also incurring the safety of the humans [5][4].
