From Whence we Came Famous French historian Alexis de Tocqueville once said, “America is great because she is good. If America ever ceases to be good, she will cease to be great” (qtd. in Carson 651). In “Recovering America’s Exceptionalism,” Dr. Ben S. Carson explains that our Judeo-Christian roots and values are what set America apart from all other countries. These values include decency, honesty, compassion, and fairness.…
Mason Owens Essay 1 The argument in the book American Crucible Race and Nation in the Twentieth Century by Gary Gerstle is conveyed in the introduction to his book. Gerstle writes about three different but interrelated ideas of America. The first part of his argument is the idea of Racial Nationalism and its importance in American Nationalism “Just as other scholars have insisted on the centrality of race…I argue for its importance in regards to American Nationalism” (12).…
In this essay, I will be talking about what America means to me. I will be talking about 3 main ideas. The first idea is valor, which is great courage in the face of danger. The second idea is independence, the idea of being independent. The last idea is liberty, an idea where it is the state of being free, within the society.…
American exceptionalism can be a contributing factor leading them to want to excel even on trade. Nevertheless, trade is not about who is the winner in the game, trade is about who has a better comparative advantage. In the eyes of the world, America’s number one place is getting obscured by that of China to the point that Americans see it as a backlash. In reality China is changing so rapidly that I am afraid America will be able to keep up with China. But China’s rapid growth should not be an intimidating factor for America, and as the author stated “Stop Blaming China and India”.…
The Ugly American depicts the difficulties the United States experienced in trying to defeat communism in Southeast Asia. It highlighted methods that the U.S. should have adopted to be successful and the ones that led to failure. The book demonstrated how the political and social climates were affected by individuals’ lack of consideration and awareness of the Sarkhanese culture. The characters in this book are fictional, however some share similar qualities of American diplomats serving abroad today. In this essay, I will identify characters that either succeeded or failed to create a positive and productive atmosphere that supported the U.S. interests.…
Begining the entry of the primary Europeans, the Plight of the Native American's has been managed not without anyone else's input but instead by the early colonialist and the future youthful country the United States would move toward becoming. Show Destiny and American Exceptionalism drove the nonmilitary personnel and government dispositions towards the Native American's and their territories. The U.S. Government has and still is constantly endeavoring to take, control and oversee lands saved for the Native American individuals in light of the trust they could oversee it better. Or, on the other hand in truth when they discovered something of significant worth upon those terrains to be misused. Native American's were cleared beside their territories, driven back over the considerable gap and into the grounds of different tribes by the colonialization of American expansionism.…
America ideas are Inflammatory and provocative. How you ask yourself? Just to give you an idea I will give you an example before I start. When I was I child in Iraq, Baghdad, one of the homes of peace and knowledge in Iraq, I was walking and getting near a public street that links to new Baghdad district – I was not going there I was just walking. And while I was walking I saw an American tank.…
Why some cultures are being Americanized? Some people may think that American culture is forcing itself on their cultures or local cultures. The truth is, these cultures are allowing Americanization to take place in their countries because they want to, and they are accepting this idea. For example, in Kuwait people started to wear jeans since the seventies and in every year there is a new jeans style. My mother once told me that when she and her friends started to wear jeans they had the “Flare” style and it was the fashion at that time.…
“America was not built on fear. America was built on courage, on imagination and an unbeatable determination to do the job at hand” said Harry S Truman, the 33rd President of the United States. I believe that one quote sums up what it means to be American, Americans have no reason to be afraid, but they do have a reason to be courageous. Being an American is a privilege, and should not be taken for granted. With this in mind, my school and community are very supportive of the idea of "Americanism".…
Guns should be illegal in the US Guns… Nearly every day someone in America dies from guns. Why do they still allow this? Mass shootings and massacres in America have been going on for year and years now. Currently, in the 21st Century, Americans have allowed 212 mass shootings to happen at their schools causing more than 260 deaths and hundreds of injuries. Imagine going through this as a person, it would be traumatizing and it would scar you for life.…
American Exceptionalism "refers to the special character of the United States as a uniquely free nation based on democratic ideals and personal liberty". (wordpress.com) We see the effects and results of this philosophy in several ways in our government. For example, just the other night during President Obama's State of the Union Address, he went to great lengths to emphasize the powerfulness and control that the United States has in the world. This is true in a lot of cases, and American's are not the only one's who have adopted the idea that the United States can "do no wrong".…
”’Six of my friends have been shot in the last year alone.’” (Bradbury26). Today shootings are not uncommon. Many times people will turn on the news and hear about a shooting that has occurred. It is a tragedy that this happens but it is proceeding more and more everyday.…
That day they took the lives of 13 students and wounded 23 more students. This is just a small fraction of all the mass shootings going on in America. On April 16, 2007 at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia another 23 year old gunman killed 32 people and wounded an undetermined number of individuals. Again, on December 14, 2012 another shooter named Adam Lanza took innocent lives. The ones killed were twenty children and six adults who courageously put their lives before the innocent children at the Sandy Hook elementary school (Atkin).…
Twentieth century Europe after World War II was in a stage of fear and anxiety. Countries like Germany, Italy and Austria were devastated by the war. Novelists and artists all throughout Europe had displayed the stage of fear in their works. Artists like Albert Giacometi illustrated it in his sculpture City Square, by displaying how women and men were no longer motivated to improve their city after the war, instead they walking around the country aimlessly in shock and in fear (Brose, 270). They were shocked about the catastrophic change in their country, as to how the war had destroyed every home and road with all of the bombs the armies used.…
