There are so many diet choices around the world but many people in the United States choose to go on diets that a celebrity recommends them to try to lose weight and maintain their health. It’s almost like a fashion trend. “Well, someone famous is doing so I should do the same!” One type of diet stuck out to me the most: veganism. Many people are curious about what a vegan diet pertains to as well as the health benefits that a plant-based diet proffers. Veganism is also met with an equal number of opponents to tend to bash the lifestyle, posting playful internet memes about it on social networking sites and bantering about the flaws that, as far as I see, have largely been scientifically discredited. This book advocates for plant-based as the findings from the China study show that the less animal-based foods consumed in your diet, the healthier your diet is (“The China Study” 242). On the next page, there is a list of foods that they recommended you avoiding, minimizing intake, and eating with ease (“The China Study” 243). Based on the findings from the China study, there was a negative correlation between animal-based foods and blood cholesterol as eating animal-based foods were linked to higher blood cholesterol and breast cancer rates, while eating plant-based foods were linked to lower blood cholesterol, breast cancer rates, and cancer in the “digestive tract” (“The China Study” 105). In conclusion, all of the findings in the book, if briefly summarized, lead to one clear theory: if we all stick to strict, plant-based diets, we lessen (and may be able to reverse) our chances of “contracting deadly diseases (“The China Study”
