Informative Speech On Tithing

Good afternoon my fellow peers. Today I will be discussing a very controversial topic, and to many of you this will seem wrong. Some might see it as incredibly unbiblical, or going against the very financial foundation of the church. To those of you who face these concerns, I ask that you hear me out as I explain why you should not tithe.

So what is a tithe? When translated from Hebrew, we see it literally translates tenth. It is defined in The Webster Dictionary as, “a tenth part of something paid as a voluntary contribution or as a tax especially for the support of a religious establishment.” The problem we face today in the American church is we bring the word “tithe” out of context, and refer it to as any gift given to the church.

We can begin by analyzing the Old Testament Mosaic Laws on tithing, which calls the Israelites to bring a tenth of their harvest and livestock to the temples, which are found in the books of Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. As we examine Numbers 18:8-32, we see how tithes were to be made, and where they would go to. We see how the Levites and the priests got their income from the the tithes and sacrifices of the other tribes. Levites were to receive their income from the tithes of other tribes, since they had no inheritance in the land. The Levites were then to give their best tenth of the tithe to the priests. This provided meats for not only the priests, but also their families. They also received the 5 shekels that were given by families to redeem their firstborns, which is equivalent to about $2000 …show more content…

But as we analyze the entire Bible in a whole, and not just this text from the Old Testament, we see that as the new covenant is introduced, we no longer are held to the restraints of the mosaic law of the old covenant. Tithing is not taught in the new testament, but giving

Gary Anderson’s book Charity: The Place of the Poor in the Biblical Tradition sets out an argument that almsgiving is a religious offering to God throughout the Jewish and Christian traditions and texts. He makes the statement that early Christians and Jews focused on almsgiving as revealing the character of God and created world. Anderson sets up almsgiving as a sacrament, where giving to the poor becomes a way to access the kingdom of heaven. This action has such power because through showing mercy to another, one meets Christ, a view which is often repeated throughout early Christianity. Through almsgiving, people have the opportunity to imitate and share in God’s divine mercy.…

The Bible defines what a sin is through the Ten Commandments and other commandments, yet there are still some things that the Bible is unclear about regarding sin. The Corinthians thought that they knew the right from wrong, but they were mistaken. In 1 Corinthians, Paul addresses some of the issues the hedonistic and ascetic Corinthians were struggling with. The hedonists believed that to be spiritual they shouldn’t deny themselves anything while the ascetics believed that to be spiritual they should deny themselves all earthly pleasures. Paul corrects them by defining sin throughout 1 Corinthians.…

Ronald J. Sider writes a compelling and thought-provoking book about affluent and wealthy Christians in a world that is getting increasing needy. One of his chapters covers the topic of economic relationships among God’s chosen people. After reading the chapter, I was surprised to see several differences among the Jerusalem church and the twenty-first-century church. I discovered that the early church was much more generous with their money and resources and this challenged me to think critically about my own personal wealth and how the community of wealthy believers are using their money. Sharing of money and wealth can be seen as early in the law but it wasn’t until Jesus’s time that the sharing really began and was lived out.…

The imbalance can be examined through many different lenses and time periods. Examples can be traced from the days of Jesus to the present time. The problem of economic disparity will likely never go away, but it should not worsen throughout the years like it has especially in recent years in America. The church is not immune from this issue.…

The Broader Context: The Gospel of Luke In order to best understand how to properly interpret Luke 16:1-13, it is best to first read the passage in light of its surrounding context—the entire book of Luke. In his introduction, Luke clearly states his purpose in writing this gospel: “so that you may know the exact truth about the things you have been taught,” (Luke 1:4). This is Luke 's purpose statement, but what is the truth the Luke is trying to demonstrate? The main theme Luke wants to convey, this “exact truth,” in his gospel is that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messianic Servant to all humankind.…

One of the restrictions placed on Jews was " that in their synagogues the Jews, one and all should worship in subdued tones according to their rite,so that the Christians will not hear it". I am completely disagree with this restriction as a reason that everyone one no matter their religion, should worship in any place their god. Everyone is free to worship their god in whatever tone they want to. In the same way that Christians worship their god and praise their god, Jews and any other religion should have the same right. Another restriction placed on Jews was " We have ordained and decreed for us and our heirs that no Jews should have a freehold in any manors, lands, tenements, fees, rents, and holdings by charter, gifts,…
