Argumentative Speech About High School

Lockers slamming, bells ringing, shoes squeaking, boys laughing, girls gossiping, teachers whispering are all included in a chapter everyone goes through in their life, High School. High School is a controversial experience: some people say it was the best time of their life, and others refuse to even remember those years. For example, John Mayer says, “High School is like a spork: it 's a crappy spoon and a crappy fork, so in the end it 's just plain useless.” Stephen King states, “High school isn 't a very important place. When you 're going you think it 's a big deal, but when it 's over nobody really thinks it was great unless they 're beered up.” High School may be useless to some, but it determines what college you will attend, what …show more content…
We all wish we didn 't have to put great effort into tasks, and these gifted children have the ability to put minimal effort into school. These geniuses achieve the grades everyone desires without the constant stress of studying. Learning is an instinct to them like it is instinct for a mouse to find a piece of cheese. Most likely, the shining stars participate in a sport or extra circular activity, because their personal time outside of school isn 't spent sweating over assignments and assessments. Just to be clear, the student I 'm referring to isn 't a person with a photographic memory; being that, 10% of people have an Eidetic memory and are among preadolescents. They are just high schoolers who can understand information and are excellent test takers. Usually, these students set curves on tests and quizzes; as a result, they receive jealousy from their peers who didn 't receive as high of a mark. It may seem like to their acquaintances tests circle the right answer and books read aloud to the naturally smart; that is not the case, they earn the grades they receive. Sometimes they are referred to as: bookworms, geeks, freaky geniuses or extremely lucky. I notice teachers generally appreciate and respect these kinds students for their intelligence. The natural ability to learn is a gift. Don 't we all wish to have the talent of these bright students, or are you a lucky one among this group of …show more content…
How I look at it; the term describes the students that go the extra mile for the best grade, or the students that have to push themselves to understand concepts that do not come easily. She sits at her desk in the first row of the classroom, places her color coded binder out in-front of her along with a supply bag filled to the brim with pencils, pens, and highlighters in an assortment of every color. Waiting for the bell to ring, reviewing her complete homework assignment, the girl notices the teacher walk in, and straightens in her seat. The girl, a teacher’s pet with too much pep-in-her-step for her lowly status on the high school ladder-a freshman, smiles brightly as her teacher notices her complete homework; considering, half of the students probably didn 't bother to attempt it. The teacher begins the class with a question; of course, she knows the answer and her hand shoots up like a rocket. The instructor chooses a different kid who “doesn’t know”, more like, doesn 't pay attention. Biting her tongue, as to not yell out the answer like she did in elementary school; she learned the hard way that, that was not the way to make friends the most friends. She settles for giving her hand slight wave. Finally, the teacher calls her name and she proudly delivers the correct answer. This girl, that was so eager to get the teachers approval and the best grade in the class elementary through freshman year, was me.

Especially if you are a child and all you want is to be a ‘normal’ child; play games and engage in fun activities. However, you can’t really do all those fun activities and enjoy your childhood because you have other priorities that take most of your time as a child at the age of 12; and you aren’t a ‘normal’ child anyway if you go to KIPP.…

Like Karen Ho, she does not believe that having a set of standards for students is going to help them succeed in life. “As long as we define their success by a unified set of standards, we will continue to miss their gifts…” (Davidson 61). Karen Ho’s ideology of “smartness” defends Cathy Davidson’s wants to change the traditional methods taught in class. Smartness is not only knowledge or how much someone can memorize notes, it is not just book smarts, it is street smarts as well.…

Walking through the halls of high school I notice the behavior of some of the students. People mature differently, some may need more time while others will not. Few have the capability of graduating and leaving high school early and beginning life in what Leon Botstein, the president of Bard College, calls "the real world" (154). A high school student will graduate at age 18 after going through elementary, middle, and high school for four years, this system gives students a chance to attain knowledge in several subjects, find their interests, and to mature.…

As the juniors get ready to take the dreadful SAT and the seniors fall into a dark hole of where to apply to college, one question comes into mind: Am I “smart” enough to get accepted into a prestigious university? Nowadays, a syndrome of ‘overachievism’ fills the halls of High Schools as students overload their schedules with numerous rigorous classes and get hyperly involved in extracurricular activities. In the Overachievers: the secret life of driven kids by Alexandra Robbins, the overachieving Yale graduate goes back to her high school a decade later only to discover that the mindset of students is transforming into a obsession with grades and number of AP classes, not the joy of learning and early adulthood. Not to mention the stressful…

A new journey in my life began on August 13th, 2014 as my school principal cut the red ribbon celebrating the opening of a brand new high school. Little did I know, it would become a journey of growth and unique experiences unlike any before it, further refining and adding to my inner sculpture of identity and talent. I was going to Liberty High School, therefore it was necessary that I adapt--quickly, yet strategically. Throughout my life, I had never imagined that my high school experience would reach and exceed my expectations in the way that it did. I had the unique opportunity most people don’t get in life: to be part of a grassroots movement in establishing a culture that would enrich future students with tradition and values for many years to come.…

Entering the Conversation #1 In “Let Teenager Try Adulthood”, Leon Botstein writes that schools finally confronted something suspected after the shootings that happened at Columbine High School in Colorado. He also writes that american high school is ”obsolete and should be abolished.” Botstein says that after the shooting high school students, current students and alumni, had stories about cliques and popularity. He explains that high school is “a world defined by insiders and outsiders, in which the insiders hold sway because of superficial definitions of good looks and attractiveness, popularity and sports prowess.” In high school, sports dominate what’s really important.…

Wise Money Choices + College Costs = Minimal Stress I cannot believe I have made it this far this quickly. It feels like just yesterday when I was accepting my diploma from Mr. Salvatore, my middle school principal and crying while hugging friends who I knew would be attending a different high school than I. Then, on that hot September day, walking through what I thought must have been the biggest school in the state of New Jersey, I got lost, made new friends, and college was but a dwarfed blip on my radar, far, far away from the center of my mind. Subsequently, in tenth grade, Union High School became smaller and my excitement for graduation was planted by the upperclassmen’s conversations about the upcoming prom and graduation.…
