On the morning of Wednesday, March 14th the lockers were filled with the lively voices of my fellow peers “will you walk out ?” and “won't we get in trouble?” …show more content…
I looked up from my computer and so my two friends look at each other I could see the determination in their eyes. They both nodded at each other and stood up and walked out of the room. They started the chain reaction and I saw my classmates leave one-by-one. My teacher said this brief yet somehow impactful statement, "it's your decision". With that, I was out of the room and I had taken my two friends with me. Now enough of my rambling, I should get back to the topic at hand, the walkout at Hernandez middle school. I'm sad to say I can describe in 2 words unorganized and chaotic. When I got outside I was pushed by some sixth graders that were playing tag. I saw some lower class-men holding up some signs, one that categorically stood out to me said: "guns don't die we do". The vice principal amassed us to the back of the courtyard and tried to quiet us down which he failed at. After a while, everyone stopped talking, the silence was broken by some obnoxious 7th grader who yelled “ Tengo hambre!” and “Quiero tamales!” as soon as him and his friends stopped laughing the principal went on to give a short unmemorable and underwhelming speech, he was interrupted several times. What can we do to prevent another event like this from happening? Arm teachers, of course! No! that is not the solution according to Mark Follman not one of the 62 mass shootings that has happened in the U.S in the past 30 years has been stopped by an armed civilian. As a matter of fact, armed civilians could worsen the situation. A teacher's job is to teach their students not protect them that's why schools hire security officers. I have an aunt who's a teacher, she doesn't feel comfortable holding a gun and neither do her fellow colleagues. “We need stricter gun laws… worse case scenario a student gets a hold of the gun and ends up hurting everyone in the class” she said. The perpetrator of the Park shooting was 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz he's not old enough to buy a beer yet he's old enough to own a military grade weapon whose only purpose is to kill very quickly and effectively. We need stricter gun laws, according to BBC news the human brain doesn't stop developing until the age of 25. If my brains not done developing until the age of 25 why can I go buy a gun as soon as I turn 18? I have another question why are these issues only being brought up after a mass shooting? Shouldn't they have been talked about before the lives were lost, to prevent it from even happening in the first place? Why is our country coming together because of the loss of our children? What can I do? As a student, I can try to
