Personal Narrative: I Walk Out At Douglas High School

Improved Essays
On February 14, 2018, 17 people were killed at Douglas High School in Parkland Florida. Majority of the victims were students. For the one-month anniversary schools all across the country would walk out at 10 a.m.The walkout would last 17 minutes for the 17 victims 1 minute for each lost life. One question resonated through my head “will I walk out?” Id later find out the answer to that question to be yes. When I now think back on it I realize why I walked out. I wanted to show my support to the victims and their families, I also hoped the small form of rebellion would make a difference.
On the morning of Wednesday, March 14th the lockers were filled with the lively voices of my fellow peers “will you walk out ?” and “won't we get in trouble?”

I looked up from my computer and so my two friends look at each other I could see the determination in their eyes. They both nodded at each other and stood up and walked out of the room. They started the chain reaction and I saw my classmates leave one-by-one. My teacher said this brief yet somehow impactful statement, "it's your decision". With that, I was out of the room and I had taken my two friends with me. Now enough of my rambling, I should get back to the topic at hand, the walkout at Hernandez middle school. I'm sad to say I can describe in 2 words unorganized and chaotic. When I got outside I was pushed by some sixth graders that were playing tag. I saw some lower class-men holding up some signs, one that categorically stood out to me said: "guns don't die we do". The vice principal amassed us to the back of the courtyard and tried to quiet us down which he failed at. After a while, everyone stopped talking, the silence was broken by some obnoxious 7th grader who yelled “ Tengo hambre!” and “Quiero tamales!” as soon as him and his friends stopped laughing the principal went on to give a short unmemorable and underwhelming speech, he was interrupted several times. The 6th grader behind me kept giggling and talking about her Snapchat. I'm not going to lie the thought of slapping her in the back of the …show more content…
What can we do to prevent another event like this from happening? Arm teachers, of course! No! that is not the solution according to Mark Follman not one of the 62 mass shootings that has happened in the U.S in the past 30 years has been stopped by an armed civilian. As a matter of fact, armed civilians could worsen the situation. A teacher's job is to teach their students not protect them that's why schools hire security officers. I have an aunt who's a teacher, she doesn't feel comfortable holding a gun and neither do her fellow colleagues. “We need stricter gun laws… worse case scenario a student gets a hold of the gun and ends up hurting everyone in the class” she said. The perpetrator of the Park shooting was 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz he's not old enough to buy a beer yet he's old enough to own a military grade weapon whose only purpose is to kill very quickly and effectively. We need stricter gun laws, according to BBC news the human brain doesn't stop developing until the age of 25. If my brains not done developing until the age of 25 why can I go buy a gun as soon as I turn 18? I have another question why are these issues only being brought up after a mass shooting? Shouldn't they have been talked about before the lives were lost, to prevent it from even happening in the first place? Why is our country coming together because of the loss of our children? What can I do? As a student, I can try to

The article Ian Tuttle wrote “Go Back To Class”, is a plea to Jefferson County students to educate themselves on the protest before taking action towards protesting the cause. In Tuttle’s three page article, he loses himself in his opinion based assumptions, and puts down students and teachers for managing to shut down schools in the Jefferson County area due to protesting against the new reform censorship in regards history curriculum. Ian feels strongly about his beliefs on why many students chose to walk out that day, these beliefs had the ability to shed a negative light on only the protesting students of Jefferson County. There are many alternatives but as many may not work we have to keep trying to solve these problems. Many thing will fail to stop mass shootings but we’ve got to find something. We cannot turn to something as dangerous as guns on school property it would create an even bigger problem. They had a buzz-in system at Sandy Hook, but it did them no good at all, the guy shot his way in. School-associated student homicide rates decreased significantly after the federal laws restricting guns in schools were adopted in the early 1990s, and fewer students are carrying guns.…

Current Event Recently, Kansas has been considering a proposal that would make schools liable for mass shootings that might occur there if the institution does not have armed teachers. The proposal was prompted by the shooting in Parkland, Florida. This is concerning to many people as they believe that this is just one step toward mandating all teachers to be trained to shoot and to carry a gun. This proposal, if passed, would be one of the most intense bills that are for armed teachers.…

If a student’s intent on hurting people they would know who would have a gun and how to get it. Also school officials are not the police, they have not been trained for these types of situations and can do more harm than good. The police can respond calmly than someone who is not used to being in these situations. Teachers should not be leaping in and start shooting away trying to fight the attacker, they should be trying to get the students away safely. More guns being fired is not the solution in a mass shooting and would likely bring more casualties and be harmful than intended originally.…

Sitting in my homeroom anxiously waiting for the morning announcements to come on, so I can hear who won the Student Government Association campaign. As usual the principal comes on saying the daily broadcast news, but today was unusually apathetic. It sounded as if he had a croak in his throat that wouldn’t let him speak vociferously about the upcoming news. Eventually, our principal was able to gather his words to say, “Today, we have lost one of our fellow students due to gun violence. This needs to be put to an end, every other week I cut on the television and I see another one of our youth dead.…

In the case of Sandy Hook Elementary, many have suggested that having armed guards at schools to control gun violence would be a start in the right direction in curbing gun violence in schools. This is considered a temporary solution until stricter laws are developed and put into place on purchasing guns. Veronique Pozner, one of the parents who lost a child, said that “I think there might be a certain power in deterrence. In the case of Newtown, it 's clear that the perpetrator did choose the path of least resistance, the most vulnerable defenseless victims. He didn 't head for the high school where he could have been tackled.…

When one is in highschool it is essential that they focus on subjects they will use in their future careers. By having so many requirements regarding mandatory classes, students are often held back from taking classes that interest them and not having enough space to focus on subjects that matter to them. I will use civil disobedience to stop this. I plan on protesting taking all required classes. Some classes should be required, but only to be taken once.…

Moderate Antiwar Activist I am writing this letter to throw my weight behind the antiwar activism going on at the university and around the country. It is entrenched in our constitution that it is our basic right to protest and there could be no better time to exercise that right than in the current situation considering the irresponsible move by our government to send troops to Vietnam. Imagine what the world would be like if we all remained silent about these issues of national interest. Ours would be a sad story because there is enough evidence from the past on what happened to our country when the crowds chose to remain silent.…

It was no typical Monday morning in the halls of Rossview High School. There was some sort of excitement that lingered in the halls, that had not yet been discovered. There were Exit 8 members running around like chickens without heads, trying to make sure everything for their senior show would be perfect. Meanwhile, the yearbook staff, minus a few stragglers, were up bright and early ready for what would make an interesting distribution day. The book, a surprise to all, was a secret hidden between four staff members for almost a year, was ready to finally be shared with the school.…

The objective of my classmates’ social boycott for the past three months is me. Even though I hold no position of power, or any sort of outstanding feature, other than wearing a hijab, I greet each school day with a smile to their hardened side glances. I suppose that after finding out that one of my friends had the answer key to a Latin final exam, one that had the entire junior year class anxious and jumpy, rebuking her for offering it to me and for even having possession of it in the first place, and then advising her to get rid of it, must have made me a target to her darts of suspicion on who told the administration about the cheated Latin final exam incident. The night before this debacle of the year, most of my Latin class members and…
