Varley claims, “Other positive effects cited by researchers include better attendance, fewer tardiness, far fewer students falling asleep at their desks, more alert students more engaged in the learning process, less depression, fewer problems at home and among friends, enhanced school atmosphere, and fewer illnesses” (124). In other words, the list of the benefits includes changes in almost all areas that affect the mental and physical health of adolescents. In addition, Emily Richmond, in her article “Why School Should Start Later in the Morning”, argues, “Schools also saw the decrease in … substance abuse. Some even had a dramatic drop in teen car crashes” (1). In other words, even those areas that seemed not very connected to change in the sleep schedule had been affected by the change and in turn affected the lives of students.…

Mathis Moore Too early There are plenty of risks caused by not getting enough sleep for your age, such as being more likely to be overweight, depressive symptoms, and perform poorly in school and activities. That being said, the CDC reports that less than 1 in 5 school in the United States start before 8:30, which is what they recommend schools start at. While teachers would benefit from the extra sleep themselves, they also would see students be more attentive in the morning because they would not be as tired. Ergo, Schools should start later than 8:30 because students and teachers would benefit in health from getting extra sleep, and would benefit from being more attentive and awake in the morning.…

For many years, high school students have been complaining that school starts too early which results in their being denied sufficient sleep. While some people might argue that students claiming inadequate sleep could simply manage their time better, research conducted into the natural sleep patterns of adolescents supports the hypothesis that they naturally go to bed later and wake up much later. Studies that show adolescent's who start their days too early experience conflict with their natural Circadian rhythms. As a result, most high school students do not experience a state of being fully awake and at peak awareness until about 8:30AM. It follows that beginning classes prior 8:30 AM compromises maximum productivity as it cannot be convincingly argued that school should begin before students are fully awake and aware.…
