“RRRRING” The bell screamed and I had to scurry home. It was wintertime and pitch black. The street lamps were no match for the darkness. My mom was at work and I had soccer at 4:30 and I practiced until 5:30. After that, I had dinner and homework to get to. I thought to myself why did school have to start later? I fell asleep at midnight, just to do all of that over again the next day. The principal may have thought that school should begin at 9:00am, however, I was loath to this idea and it infuriates me that he agreed to such a thing. Therefore, schools should not start later because it can lead to transportation issues, less time for extracurriculars, and would leave teens clueless about how to manage their busy schedules.
Primarily, schools should start later because many students will not be able to get to or leave school as easily as before. Most adults go to work around the same time as students go to school, so if school started later, students would not have rides to school and would either have to take the bus or walk. According to the New York State Law, school has to be at minimum, 6.25 hours. So if school started later, it would result in school ending later as well. The students would not be able to go to extracurriculars as long as they do. Sports like track and tennis would be hard to participate in during the wintertime when it’s dark. For example, children may not see a baseball hurdling towards them in the inky black night. This would cause lots of unnecessary injuries and harm. Who would want injured kids? Many kids would have to do homework and eat dinner afterwards so that would make them sleep even later than before. Kids may just sleep the same amount of hours but just everything pushed back an
