Argumentative Essay: Why Marijuana Should Be Legal

Improved Essays
I believe that marijuana should be illegal for many reasons. I believe that people that smoke marijuana have given up on life. Also, people that grew up in a family that smoke it everyday didn’t have a choice to not be around it. However, once they learn that marijuana is bad for your health, they should have changed their perspective on smoking everyday. Leaders like Senator Rand Paul, Republican of Kentucky, have said that they don’t agree with the fact that marijuana should be legal. Because many people have gotten caught with drugs that are illegal, they have been put into jails and prisons for their bad decisions. However, these local jails and prisons are getting overcrowded and the law enforcement budgets have reframed the issue. In Florida, voters were to decide if they wanted marijuana to be legalized even just for medical uses. Many local jails and prisons are getting overcrowded because of all the men and women that are getting …show more content…
However there are some people that take advantage of those type of people. One of the episodes was about how somebody that was sick would be under the control of a bigger person. That person would make them go out and get more from their doctor. Marijuana has become something that people need and not just do it sometimes. My mom always told me that the couple times you do it, you can’t stop. Money has to do a lot with marijuana because I know it’s not cheap. It’s crazy to think how much money people around us spend so much money for something that’s only going to keep you away from the world for a couple of hours. Once you’re off of it, you’re back to thinking about the responsibilities that you have. After that, all they do is do it again and again, and now they can’t stop because they need it. It’s sad to think that there are some families out there that allow their kids to smoke marijuana even if it’s because that’s the way they were

The federal government spends over sixteen billion dollars to enforce drug laws every year, not including the costs to house and care for those convicted drug offenders. Putting this in perspective, that is about ten billion estimated taxpayers’ dollars a year because taxpayers pay for each individual sent to prison just for possession of marijuana (Boaz, 2000). A very striking example of these laws would be Louisiana, where being caught with a joint could result in six months in the country parish, while a second offense can result in up to five years, and a third up to twenty years of jail time (Barcott 2014). Not to mention that the prohibition of marijuana is commonly a waste of police officer’s time, especially in the eyes of police officers themselves, some of which have joined a group called Law Enforcement Against Prohibition. Jack Cole, retired New Jersey State Police Lieutenant, has made some valuable points such as when an officer could have been investigating something serious, such as domestic abuse, current prohibition laws require officers to instead invest their time chasing a couple of harmless teenagers smoking marijuana.…

One of the biggest issue that is debated still till this day is if or not marijuana should be legalized. The legalization of marijuana is such a controversial subject because it the most used illegal drug and always stirs up a debate of whether or not it should be legalized. Even though marijuana can be harmful if used irresponsibly; it is still the most common drug in all the United States and will always be used regardless if for private reasons or for medical purposes. Those in proposition have expressed fears that through ease of access, numbers in pot consumption would increase drastically causing a spark in crime, possible health risks, and a lazier society which would potentially increase unemployment and welfare. While studying Colorado, who had been the first state in the U.S. to legalize recreational use of marijuana in January 2014, we can now see that these fears held no depth. In fact, the criminalization of marijuana has had a great strain on the American people through paying billions in taxes for the enforcement of marijuana related crimes and the overcrowding marijuana cases causes in prisons and jails (DPA, Drug Policy Alliance). We have since seen, through Colorado’s full recreational legalization in beginning 2014, that the fears of legalized recreational marijuana held no depth or truth. In fact, Colorado has shown us the endless pros of such: boost in revenue, de-crowding in correctional facilities, boost…

The United States has more people in prison than any other country. More than 75% of these imprisonments are due to arrests made for possession of marijuana. The amount of people in prison for marijuana far exceeds the amount of people that are in jail for murder or other serious crimes. In my opinion, it is crazy for someone to serve more time for possession of marijuana, than someone that commits murder. What is sad, is that it happens all the time.…

My essay is about the legal law against people who aren’t twenty-one able to buy or smoke cannabis legally. Most people say your an adult when you turn eighteen but in reality are you really an adult when you turn eighteen? No there is now a law in California where you have to be twenty-one to legally buy alcohol and/or cannabis. If by law you are and adult when you turn eighteen you should be able to buy cannabis legally. They should still be strict about it…

Marijuana is not the issue, the issue is that people use marijuana in the wrong way. The article “going to pot” it states Marijuana is more popular and accessible in the U.S. than any other street drug. In national surveys, 48 percent of Americans say they have tried it, and 6.5 percent of high school seniors admit to daily use. So it was not too surprising when two states, Washington and Colorado, became the first to legalize recreational marijuana in the November 2012 general election, albeit in limited quantity, for anyone over the age of 21. ( Khamsi,2013) Marijuana should be legalized because if the government was to give the world access to the drug it would cut down crimes.…

The illegality of marijuana has helped form violent organized crime families in the form of drug cartels, known for the exploitation of children as drug mules, with no concern for their health or well-being. “Authors reported overall “no statistically significant differences in marijuana use before and after policy change for any state pairing,” and acknowledged that some states that…

For this reason, they think it should be illegal. They also think it is terrible for your mental and physical health. They, too, believe it decimates many users’ lives. Lastly, people think marijuana should be illegal because it can cause impairment to those using it, which can possibly endangering those around them. I, on the other hand, disagree with this stance and believe that cannabis should be legal throughout the entire United States.…

I am writing to express my frustration on why marijuana is still illegal for even medical purposes while teh states around us are having huge profit on making marijuana legal. It helps with chemotherapy, Crohn 's disease, weight loss, HIV or nerve pain, and more. However it will be be better if it is full legalized with some restriction with it. Like Colorado has legalized Marijuana and have been profiting seen then, as the tax revenue has been used to a positive purpose; building schools, since then even the crime rate and accident rates have gone down, and lastly Colorado gets tax revenue of over $40 billion. Colorado 's having a lot of benefits based on keeping marijuana legalized and all their money is going towards education, as well as…

Marijuana simply has no good reason to be illegal. It is important medicinally, it is already taken in moderation by the users, and all its worst negative effects can easily be countered. To bring up another point, it is also incredible for stress relief, and it is also a useful sleep aid to those with trouble sleeping. The drug should be legalized or, if nothing else, decriminalized. Countless people have been thrown in jail for possession of small amounts of one of the least harmful drugs, and some have even received life sentences for it!…
