Reflective Essay: What I Learned In A Summer Class

Improved Essays
I have taken a few classes in the past years but I had never taken a summer class. In elementary school, middle, and high school I didn't have summer school either. This semester in college I decided it was necessary for me to catch up on my studies, so I decided to enroll in to a summer class. I have been lucky to have chosen a great class with a very helpful teacher who has taught me so much. In this course we wrote four major essays, a narrative, an argumentative, a report essay and an analysis. I learned many things from the essays as well the class in general, although, there are a few things that I would like to improve for future classes. The first essay that we wrote was a narrative. For this specific essay, I wrote an autobiography because I felt that the essay would have more meaning if it was something personal. In this essay we had to focus on writing a story about anything as long as it would be interesting for us and the reader, and also had a point. Our other essay was an argumentative essay, in which we had to argue our stand on a certain issue. the topic that i chose for this essay is very personal for me, therefor i decided to stick to it no matter how hard it would be. in this essay our purpose was to try to convince the reader of our stand on a certain topic with …show more content…
i learned how to write multiple essay, and along with those essays I learned how to look for reliable information and how to cite it within the essay as well as writing a works cited page. for me it is important to be able to improve my writing techniques in order to be able to do better in the career i chose. i do however believe that what i learned this class i would not have learned anywhere else. Continuing to write essays and how to write them has always been something that I aspire to do. The things that I learned in this class are things that I hope to continue to develop and improve in future writing

Honestly I think i didn't learn a whole lot. Also I have learned that I definitely do not like doing research papers. I think that we should do something more enjoyable other than writing a few page miniature essay about a topic that you like, I think that if we do this we should be given a topic we do not know much about. This would help because it would give us greater experience on how to search a topic other than on something we might know a lot about. But that is just how I feel, to me I hate to do anything English class related I would much rather be in a class that I enjoy no…

Overall the essays that we have read this semester have been good. There are a few essays in particular that I think benefited me the most was “The Time to Act I Now” written by Al Gore, “Just Walk on By” written by Brent Staples, and the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” written by Martin Luther King. These essays have benefited me in a numerous amount of ways in which I am going to explain how their writing styles helped me become a better writer. Staples helped me a lot in which he taught me to explain my reasoning fully so that the audience know exactly what I am talking about. Another thing that Staples taught me was to explain the setting of the story in full detail so the readers can visualize what’s actually happening in the story this…

To me, writing is just ok, nothing special. It definitely isn’t something I get excited about. My first formal writing class was in 6th grade, where we followed The Institute for Excellence in Writing’s curriculum. My fellow classmates and I mainly wrote short, 1-3 paragraph reports on various historical topics. I did well in these classes, I just never really enjoyed the process of writing.…

Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

Not only have I learned how to carry out a conversation through discussions, I have also learned how to compose an essay. When I began this class I was sure I knew how to write a paper and make it sound like I knew what I was talking about. Upon completion of my first essay I discovered just how wrong I was. While there were a minimal amount of errors, the errors present made my essay sound as if it had been written by a child. After making the suggested corrections, I saw just how much my essay improved.…

One of the most important lessons was that I needed to stay on top of my work otherwise it would take a while to catch up. In college, classes and papers will fly by faster than in this class, so I feel lucky to have the opportunity to feel the college paper writing experience. I also this this class taught me to work hard and never give anything less than 100 percent. I feel this way because with every paper I had to prove my skills and writing techniques in order to get a good grade. Taking this class has helped me improve my skills and techniques as a writer, and I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead in Composition…

No matter where you go or went to school, you always have some type of English class that forces you to write papers. These papers usually has to be a certain way or over a certain topic. To me that was a pretty big problem for me because I could do free writing easy, but when you tell me to write about something that I don 't have any interest in and I have to follow your “rules”, then I will just try to blow it off. I have always hated the way Professors and the world had this “image” of their version of a “perfect” essay. I always messed up on the rules like where to put my commas or semicolons, that to me is the hardest part to not have a run- on sentence.…

When I began studying at the University of Montevallo, I had a background of high school creative writing and English classes, and one summer of a college English class. To be honest, I was terrified of jumping into my fall English 102 class. I felt I was unprepared for a serious college level composition class, and that I would have a strenuous time adjusting to a four-year university. However, as I walk away from my English 102 class I carry the understanding of writing a college level essay, undertaking research and completing a research and argument paper properly, and knowledge to prepare me for my other classes and profession.…

Like I previously stated I learned how to do many things with my writing this semester. The first essay we wrote, a narrative, was probably my favorite essay to write. Although it was my favorite, it was definitely not my best. I wrote my essay and felt like it was complete and worthy to turn in. Little did I know that was not the case.…

Throughout this semester of English 101, writing has become more of a skill than a struggle. Writing was a challenge that I dreaded when I chose to be in the course, nonetheless with time, I learned from my mistakes and was able to improve. This course made me very doubtful on whether I could be capable of even writing a paper that would provide me with a decent grade, but at the same time made me push myself in my writing technique. In the end, I can reflect that I learned from my mistakes and wrote papers that took time and dedication to accomplish. I learned from this class to be confident in my writing and make all the mistakes to receive the grade I want in the end.…

English 2010 has been a learning experience for me, I've been able to learn a lot about english that I did not know or work on before. With the first essay that we worked on I did a memoir I really enjoyed working on this paper, In class we were able to get freedom to add pictures to are pictures make it a little bit more creative I certainly was not used to this; I’ve been told my whole schooling experience that you have the intro and the conclusion and three body paragraphs. The memoir I was able to write to what I felt like I needed it to be, add pictures so it could appeal more to the eye when reading and also made it easier.…

When I was young I was never the best at reading even though my parents owned many books and magazines that they read on a daily basis. My mother enjoyed reading her gossip magazines that she would receive in the mail once a month and my father had a whole bookshelf full of history books. My parents would always encourage me to read the books I would check out at the school library to improve my reading and writing but that advice usually went in through one ear and out the other. The only books I would really attempt to read had to be humorous or horrifying, my favorites were the Goosebumps collection. I loved reading these books alone in my room where I couldn’t be sidetracked by all the commotion that went on in my house.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
