Argumentative Essay: The Role Of Women In Professional Sports

In the past, there have been many counter arguments that state that women are not the victims of gender bias but are in fact the perpetrators. Arguments include last name changes, stay at home parents, and athletics. People argue that women are adhering to societal standards by changing their last names from their maiden names to their spouse’s name when they get married(Sommers, “Women are”). Generally speaking, when people think of which parent would be the one who would be deemed the stay at home parent, they think of women. Men argue that women do this to themselves as they are not willing to go out into the workforce and work but simply wish to stay at home, as the name states, and do domestic duties (Sommers, “Women are”). Finally athletics has long been a disputed topic in terms of gender but many men argue that the reason why women’s sports are not popular is because the women are not as good of athletes as men are and cannot keep up with the constant changes in athletics. Society has created ideals on a woman’s role in culture, but those ideals are not always in the best interest for today’s time. Women have been put into categories and boxes to keep them in the domestic sphere and not venture out into the world because that was deemed a man’s world. As time goes on, women are rallying together and standing up for the rights that they deserve and not just taking the scraps of life. Gender should not determine one’s place in society because both men and women alike deserve equal rights and treatment in society. Everyone should feel comfortable in their own skin and position in life because life only comes around once, and people shouldn’t have to worry about fighting for their rights when they should be enjoying
