I believe the penny should be eliminated because it costs too much. Each penny costs 2.41 cents to produce (Sommer). It costs double to make something of little value. When you receive pennies as change for an item you purchased, most people will throw them in jars, or put them on their dressers (Sommer). Having numerous jars of pennies can add up to a lot of space taken away. Carrying pennies in your pocket while you’re shopping or just walking around can be useless and tiresome. They are heavy, noisy, and you need 100 pennies to make one dollar when you could carry around one dollar bills. Throwing pennies onto your dresser, nightstand, or even a jar consumes space for extra storage. Eliminating the penny reduces clutter caused by loose coins. Many people believe that the penny should stay because they add up for a good cause and they don’t matter to people. Without the penny, people would be forced to donate larger coins, which makes more money (Waterhouse). Others believe that we should keep it because the Mint is still exploring different ways to make the penny (Sommer). We could just stop wasting time and money trying to remake the penny and just quit circulating it, saving extra money. Another reason people want to keep the penny is because it is a part of American history and has been around for hundreds of years (Sommer). If we stop making the penny then you can still keep them, just not use them as they won’t have any value. While many people want to keep the penny, i still believe we should get rid of
