Argumentative Essay: The Michael Brown Protest

Great Essays
On February 7, 2016 David Joseph was shot and killed by Officer Freeman. He was a seventeen year old young unarmed African American. In 2015 there was a rate of 1,134 deaths, five times higher than Caucasian of the same age according to The Guardians Us policing counted article (Swaine, 2016).
When given an interview assistant Chief Brian Manley says the officer gave commands to Brown and he did not comply and charged at Officer Freeman ( Noelle, 2016).
Manley told reporters the teen was not wearing any clothes and charged at veteran Officer Geoffrey Freeman who is also an African American. Since Joseph was not wearing any clothes he was obviously not in the right state of mind. Officer Freeman has had about forty hours of mental health peace officer training (Schwaller, 2016). So that makes me believe he should know what to do in a given situation.
According to APD chief Art Acevedo Sunday February 7 at 11: am female witness approached by black male teen believed to be David and David attempted to get her to come to him across the street. The witness refused two neighbors saw the interaction and approach and young men walked off and said watch yourself now” (Acevedo, 2016). Pretty much the details are scant. Police say they received a call of the teen acting erratically and chasing another male in a nearby apartment complex. At 12000 block of Nature’s Bend in Austin (Bien, 2016). Where according to Statesman the officer feared for his life and is why he shot Brown. The in car camera did not capture the video but just the audio. Saying the shooting happened in a number of seconds. Acevedo spoke about calls the day before trying to connect the calls. But the way I see it is what is truly important is what happened that day. Officer Geoffrey Freeman has been an officer for ten years (Newton, 2016). He has not yet talked in public about the situation but has been put on administrative leave as protocol. There will be an autopsy by Travis County Medical Examiner’s office that will tell us if there was any substance abuse at the time of his death (Ricke, 2016). There is also a separate investigation by the Special Investigations Unit to see if Freeman did anything wrong and will more than likely be presented to Travis County grand jury. David’s mother also is wondering why her son got shot (Ricke, 2016). Joseph was a young man at 17 was about to graduate. Joseph played sports and was planning on going to college (Ricke, 2016). The Director of the Texas Civil Rights Project Jim Harrington said, “It is almost incomprehensible that a young naked man would be considered dangerous such that a police officer would kill him.” He also called for “a full, fair, and open investigation.” (Ricke, 2016). This brought a cry in protest, Protestors shouted No Justice No peace at the Austin city hall which is what they also protested in the Michael Brown protest.

("David Joseph Protest Recorded by Mixerr Reviews," 2016). I just hope this protest does not get out of control as Michael Browns did and the protest is done peacefully. Protestors spoke that black lives matter (Newton, 2016).
There was also concerns with the NAACP regarding police procedures. One of the members of the activist is Fatima Mann involved in Black lives matter says, “There needs to be more training and more accountability and see that adequate leadership exists,” (Newton, 2016). NAACP president Nelson Linder is upset that this problem keeps getting repeated and doesn’t stop. Now the Naacp is checking to see if this killing was illegal. This brought about the question of why other forms of protection weren’t used such as a taser as if shooting was the only answer (Newton, 2016). There was no witnesses during this event. In this story I agree with Mann police seem to need to be more trained in order for them to understand shooting a human should be the last option. I don’t see how you can fear for your life when the teenager is nude and you can see he is unarmed. I don’t see how his death can be justified (Jankonski, 2016). This

Jordan Baker, however, was not breaking any laws or engaged in any unlawful conduct. Officer Castro claims that he confronted Jordan Baker because he looked “suspicious,” but Castro’s basis for claiming that Baker looked “suspicious” was based on Baker’s race and the fact that he was wearing a hooded sweatshirt. Furthermore, it is important to understand that he was not shot while in the process of being reprimanded, but he tried to take out his identification, as he anticipated that he might be asked for an ID due to racial profiling and stop-and-frisk. How ironic! He must have been used to being stopped and ID’d by the police. This single case should be enough to debunk the whole notion that skin color is not a determining factor in America. Furthermore, Citizen also documents many…

Police brutality and racism seem to be consistently connected to one another. This has become a serious issue in which circumstances have ended violently or even fatally when involving police officers and African American citizens. In 2014, the United States Census Bureau reported that African American people make up only 13.2% of our population. Anyone can become a victim of police brutality, regardless of their race; but statistics show that African American people are being killed by police at more than twice the rate of Caucasian and Hispanic people. It is also considerably more likely for the African American victims in these situations to have been unarmed at their time of death.…
