The history of Guantanamo Bay, the current happenings with its prisoners and the educated commentary about the prison have brought forth the idea of closing Gitmo. The claim that prisoners are enduring treatment questionable to international standards factors most into this argument. Detainees of Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp, guilty or not, have been forced to endure inhumane conditions throughout their imprisonment. For this reason, the United States government should outline a plan to close the prison and place it into action. When speaking of Guantanamo Bay, the way the United States obtained the land is rarely discussed. One must think, what really are the values that represent Americans? For fifteen years the American people have sat and allowed these things to happen because of a simple act of terrorism. Do not misinterpret, the September 11 attacks were a sad moment in American history, but why must so many innocent people pay for what a terrorist group has done. It is wondered why extremist groups hate America as a whole when the U.S. government has tried to get revenge against them but has included their country and religion as a whole. Not only have people’s lives changed because of Guantanamo and unlawful war, imagine the people with underlying problems. Imagine having the fault of turning a mild depression into something worse. (Apuzzo) Omar Khadr was captured at the age of 15, he confessed to a number of war crimes, having been brought into involvement with al-Qaeda by his father. Years later at the age of 22, he received a mental evaluation from General Xenakis, a military psychiatrist. Xenakis observed an anxiety attacked brewing in Khadr who “began to sweat, and fan himself, despite the air-conditioned chill. He tugged his shirt off, and General Xenakis realized that he was witnessing an anxiety.” Following this event, Xenakis came to conclusion that Khadr has post-traumatic stress.
