“I see America from the eyes of a victim. I don’t see any American Dream. I see an American nightmare.” (Malcom X). The American Dream was a promise where there would be equality, financial stability, a successful job, and rightful home ownership. This promise has once been what people would strive for, yet nowadays people don’t think of this promise. Americans now are busy thinking of the many problems that have occurred within their lives. The piling of bills, not enough money, heath care, family, and more that makes Americans worry if they are going to be able to make ends meet. The American Dream is the past. It is not an important aspect in society today. From the poem America by Claude McKay, the poem speaks of how America really is, a nightmare. “Although she feeds me bread of bitterness, And sinks into my throat her tiger’s tooth, Stealing my breath of life, I will confess I love this cultured hell that tests my youth!” (McKay 14). America takes everything that people give and give nothing in return has people struggling to make ends meet. They still yet love America because they believe that America is providing everyone with financial stability, equality, fair wages, etc. That is not the case, Americans are now struggling to survive. They take multiple jobs, and do not enjoy their job. It isn’t what most Americans would like to do for a living, but they need a job to pay bills with. From the article America and I by Anzia Yezierska she talks about her own experience when coming to America. “And I could not tear it out of me, the feeling that America must be somewhere, somehow- only I couldn’t find it- my America, where I would work for love, and not for a living.” (Yezierska 19). Her journey was not pleasant, she was taken for granted, homeless, jobless, had minimum wage, not many people understood her. She then realized that what she was looking for wasn’t available to her.
