Argumentative Essay: The Extension Of Time In Schools

Improved Essays
I vigorously disagree with the Dickenson County School Board extending time on campus. The change will cause more harm than good to come from it. Classes are longer than needed, anyways. Students and staff may get home after dark. This extra time results in extra stress on students and staff. This extension of time will injure students and staff more than assist them. The school board must take all effects into account before making a decision. Nevertheless, school days are long enough. There is more than enough time to accomplish what the Dickenson County School Board wants completed. Nine and a half hours of school is “Overkill.” The extension of time will harm more students and staff than help them. Plus, it is impossible to distribute the extra time evenly among the other classes. Honestly, the extension of time will severely harm the school board’s reputation if they put this change into effect. …show more content…
Consequently, this extension of time may cause students and staff to get home after nightfall. However, this change may cause students and staff to get to school before dayrise and get home after nightfall. Plus, students and staff may not be able to participate in extracurricular activities. This change may also cause students and staff to transfer to other schools in protest of the change. Consequently, the time extension will put even more stress on students and staff. Honestly, the longer classes will weigh down students and staff like a mule, causing stress. Also, this extra stress may lead to students and staff having mental breakdowns. Particularly, this may perhaps lead to lower overall scores and grades, affecting the school board even further. This time extension has many downsides, compared to the few, if any,

Should the school board add on one and a half hour ? The school board should not add on one and a half hours to our school hours, because some kids might have another job, some have sports to do, they might have something important to do. The reason they shouldn’t add on a hour and a half is because some kids or teachers might have another job to attend. Most teachers have a second job they have to be at .…

They might be thinking having an early day can have the sports players practice in the daylight. Well, that sports player will be too tired to practice. Also, they would get hurt way more often by being tired during the practice. You might also be thinking the whole district will have to move their times back because the buses will take the high school later and then the middle school later and the elementary school later. I say that is even better for everybody to get more sleep than they need and have way more energy for the day.…

The Mill Valley High School Board members should reject the proposed idea of a later school day because it is beneficial to students with after school activities such as sports and jobs. The idea that a later school day is beneficial towards students is preposterous because students with after school activities and jobs would need to be out of school at an earlier hour. Take John Sherwood’s testimony for example. He complains, “But it’s going to make football practice a nightmare. We won’t be able to be dressed and on the field until 4:45, and in October, it starts getting dark by 5:30...…

If students start earlier then they get to leave earlier (classroom.synonym.com). This opinion is false because even if school will still begin at the same time as usual and kids will still be tired. Even if school did start earlier it would not be worth it for kids and teenagers because they need more sleep, which would mean they would need to go to bed earlier in the evening to get in a full eight hours. With sports, homework and other activities it is not possible for kids to go to bed early enough to get up in the morning. This would only be more harmful, even if it meant getting to leave school earlier.…

Removing certain classes will give the teachers more time to teach the long content classes. Some of the bigger courses require more content than others such as, Algebra one and two, English one through four, and all the Science courses that are required. I have been in a rushed class before and it did not help when I had to take the end of course exam. When I took the end of course exam there were a lot of problems that I didn’t know the answer to because of the limited time we had.
