Argumentative Essay: The Elimination Of The Penny

The idea of the elimination of the penny has been an ongoing debate for the past decade. The idea first started when the cost of the creation of the penny became public. It costs more money to make a penny than a penny is actually worth. Therefore every time a penny is created the government is losing money. It has become a shock to me to find out that the simple fix to this problem is to stop the minting process of such a useless coin, but we still continue to do so. If someone were to actually spend many hours of their lives collecting the coins, although it is illegal, they could melt them down and get more money than the actual amount of pennies they had, roughly seven-tenths of a penny more. Ultimately, the penny is just not cost effective to our society in which we in habit, therefore to keep living in a prosperous nation we must eradicate the idea of a penny from existence. …show more content…
For example, if the Kellogg Company where to create a new cereal at the cost of one dollar and eighty-nine cents a box, they could not afford to sell that cereal for one dollar and fifty cents a box. They would run themselves out of business very quickly, or they would decide against making that box of cereal and keep making the other boxes that are less cost effective.

The solution seems very simple for companies like Kellogg's, so I personally do not understand how it can be such a difficult decision for our government. Very soon, although many people disagree, our country is going to run itself out of business because of the debt we are concocting upon the government of the nation. It is not a simple idea that you could keep creating the penny, eventually we will encounter a tremendous amount of debt that we will be unable to
