The Dumbest Generation

⅚ B The current under 30 generation is the dumbest generation ever. Just because of the fact that we have access to more advanced technology and knowledge of the use of that technology, it could also be argued that the same technology has disconnected this generation from real peer contact, common sense problem solving skills, connection to writing skills, and critical thinking which has put the under 30 generation at a disadvantage and has, in so many ways made us lazy and dumb. Most people at my school have their own or at least one computer or device they use in school and at home. Technology has taken over in many ways and used for a variety of things, but it has also dulled social senses, decreased contact with community and, at times, can make interaction with others feel unusual and awkward. We now live in a place where its weird to show up at someones door without calling or texting first because thats the new normal. Many jobs are done over the internet and made much easier, but the more we sit on the computer the more we are wasting our lives not being active and social with others face to face. The mental equipment of the young falls short of their media, money, e-gadgets, and career plans.” (Source A) Google, Bing, Yahoo Answers, AOL and MSN are a few examples of search engines used by hundreds of people daily. We all use google and many other sites to ask questions we don’t know the answers to, but we don’t always get the right answer. As a student you would rather look up the question on the web then ask your teacher. As an adult you don’t have anyone to ask but your friends so you use the internet to get your answers. Thats not always the best option because there is many incorrect and false answers. For example, Wikipedia. It’s a good site but anyone can edit it. It is very easy to tamper with information given over the web and many people in the under 30 generation are dumb enough to fall for it. Technology, social media, personal devices and search engines have given this generation more time and efficient access to information, it could be argued that its a double edged sword. Meaning all the benefits can also be seen as a means to waste time and use of energy. “Even when I’m not working, i’m as likely as not to be foraging in the Web’s info-thickets-- reading and writing e-mails, scanning headlines and blog posts, watching videos and listening to podcasts, or just tripping from link to link to link.”(Source D) A
