Argumentative Essay: The Cost Of Community College

As it stands today the average cost of attending a community college is $3,347 according to the College Board, while the average aid given to low income students is $5,730 under the pell grant. Currently most community colleges waive the cost for low income students but don’t for higher income students. This raises an issue if community college should be free to students as middle class students don’t receive the financial support given by the government or community colleges. This issue was brought to light in 2015 when president Barack Obama gave his State of the Union Address which sparked a debate regarding community college and costs. In his address, he stated community college should be free for the first two years and “as free and universal in America as highschool is today.” Following his address people voiced their opinions strongly on the matter from both sides. Such as cost would be a burden on American citizens in the form of taxes as it support an infrastructure that isn’t necessary. Low-income students already receive the necessary aid through waivers and government grants. As for middle and upper class students they are more than capable of paying the $3,347 tuition that is presented to them each year. Supporting a system where the cost of community college is illogical as it benefits the middle class as opposed to the lower income class who already have the necessary resources.There is no need to spend more on a class that is capable of paying community college tuition approving such a proposal would be a waste of
