Arguments Against Altruism

Argument Essay During 9/11, two planes crashed into the twin towers in New York City, causing fires and massive destruction. There were many altruistic people who risked their own lives to save others who were injured, with some even getting themselves killed. Altruism is when someone puts someone else’s well-being above their own. There were lots of people, including emergency service workers and civilians, that helped to save as many people as they could. There are many factors that cause altruism. Some people are just naturally altruistic, and others become altruistic depending on the situation. Many people believe that there is no such thing as genuine altruism, that people only help others to benefit themselves. While this may be true for some situations, most of the time this is not true. Most altruism is done by people who just are genuinely selfless, and care about others well-beings. Altruism has many motivations, and comes in a couple of different forms. When people were running for their lives during 9/11, they most likely fell into one of the three types of altruism: care-based, kin-based, or reciprocity-based. Altruism is not just always about gaining self-worth. It is performed by people who make sure that others are okay before themselves. It is about protecting the people you care about. Some people are only altruistic to seem like a hero, but not always. Today, people are a lot more motivated to help others just out of the kindness of their hearts. 9/11 only just motivated more people to be helpful towards others. Many more people volunteer, start programs to get supplies for people in need, and just do their best to help others in need. Altruism is only increasing around the country, which will only continue to increase as people realize how much the world needs
