Argumentative Essay: The Battle Of Cancer

Improved Essays
There have been many developments in cancer over the last few decades, but unfortunately, even the best treatment might not work. Growing up, I experienced many family members battle cancer. Both of my uncles were recently diagnosed, and after countless trips to the hospital, my uncle Jamie passed away. My other uncle, Jimmy, moved in with us shortly after. My family and I continue to take care of him and support him throughout the battle he is rigorously fighting. Jimmy was diagnosed with Leukemia a few years ago, and he is still waiting for a bone marrow transplant. With cancer, you never know the outcome. You never know if the chemotherapy will work, or if there will be any complications. When the chemotherapy didn't work for my uncle, he began to lose hope. …show more content…
After spending countless trips to the hospital and doctor's office with my uncle, I became fascinated by everything that was going on. I wanted to learn more about cancer, and discover what options he had. This initiated me to volunteer every week at the hospital. After a couple months of volunteering and talking with patients, I discovered that cancer and other illnesses are not just a fight within your body, they take over your mind too. After numerous treatments, you begin to wonder what else you can do. This opened my eyes to see how the healthcare system should not only focus on the body, but the mind too. Unfortunately, I have experienced poor care given to both my uncle's who were diagnosed with terminal cancer. I have become inspired to make a difference by providing the best care possible to patients and their families throughout their time in the hospital. The care my family received was something I don't want anyone else to ever have to go

In your discussion post, you spoke of being an oncology nurse. Working in a large hospital as both a social worker and radiographer, I have had the opportunity to work side-by-side with nursing staff. The care and compassion that is demonstrated by your profession is inspiring. I have seen nursing staff insert themselves into the middle of a situation; thereby, ensuring a patient receives the best care possible which at times can cause a heavy burden and emotional toll. Callanan and Kelly (2012) discuss how working with patients who have terminal illnesses can be “all-consuming and creeps into every corner of your life” (p. 12).…

Eight years ago my uncle was diagnosed with stage 4 throat, lung, and spine cancer. He began treatment immediately, but saw very little relief from the treatments. He spent four years in and out of hospitals and medical facilities for surgeries, therapies, and pain management. During this time he asked several doctors to end his pain and suffering and allow him to die peacefully before he was unable to make the decision. Each time he was told that it was illegal in the state of Georgia to offer such assistance, but hospice could keep him comfortable until the end.…

I believe that it is a shame that in 2008, 12.7 million people were diagnosed with cancer and an additional 7.6 million people die from this tragic disease. The World Health Organization states that in the year of 2030, this statistic will grow to 21.4 and 13.2 million respectively (Fanghua, 2010, p.297). But, what is cancer. Cancer is a disease caused by non-stop division of cells and it can happen almost anywhere in the human body. People who are stricken with this disease are people who are loved and will be missed when they inevitably die.…

It was during this time that I first began volunteering at the pediatric department of the hospital he was staying at. The 21st century has brought many social dilemmas to the top of many United States politicians’ agendas, requiring a closer look at the needs of the masses instead of the few. One of the biggest topics is healthcare reform, more specifically obtaining coverage for those who otherwise would not be able to. For long, as we have learned in our studies this semester, the United States has more often than not treated healthcare as a privilege, not as a right. This of course contrasts the majority of healthcare systems in modern Europe, highlighting the push for conversation regarding the issue. But then there is the ever present argument in favor of how the United States has privatized the health insurance market to support competition and choice among the people it is designed to serve.…

Optimistic for Cancer Cancer affects society more than any other disease. Continually, with a wide range of types, a not-so-long list of treatment options, and no definite cure, cancer embodies evil. If society embraces this evil as it is, no improvements will occur. Nonetheless, opening the eyes of humanity to other options than what appears on the surface is a large factor in future cancer success rates. Optimism is the cause of an increase of successful cancer treatments because of several causal chain arguments.…
