Abortion is one of the most debated social issues in the world right now. The 1973 Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade made abortions legal after hundreds of women were dying from illegal abortions in the late 1960s. Supporters of abortion rejoiced while opposers began working immediately to overturn what had been done. More recently, the 1992 Planned Parenthood v. Casey case established that states can restrict pre-viability abortions. Although women can disinclude their spouse from any abortion related decisions, many states now have restrictions regarding matters such as parental involvement, mandatory waiting periods, and biased counseling. The decision to have a child is a huge commitment that should not be taken lightly because of the intense time and financial responsibility that is required. Stacey Nelkin of the Huffington Post points out that women who get abortions can still become very responsible and great mothers when the time is right for them. Most young women that decide to get an abortion are unprepared to nurture another human being and it is important that we encourage them to make the decision that is best for them and the child they would be bringing into the world. If conservatives want to take that choice away because the fetus is sacred, then they best be prepared to provide those immature, ill-prepared mothers’ financial care such as health care and maid maternity leave so the child isn’t left to a worse life than if it never happened. The regret that could come with ending a potential life could also be matched with regret of keeping a baby the mother can’t support. As Seth Millstein from Bustle points out, a fetus can’t survive on it’s own. It is fully dependent on the mother. In fact, that stays the care for about 18+ years a child needs to be raised. If people have the right to refuse organ donation, even if the organ could save a life, then the same should be said for women and their babies. Women have the right to deny that embryo’s life because even if the fetus is considered alive, that doesn’t automatically mean the woman is responsible for maintaining it. Since no contraceptive is 100% effective and not everyone has easy access to contraceptives or a good sex education class, the choice to haves sex shouldn’t make the woman accountable for the possible baby that follows.
