There are many people that hold beliefs and have reasons to want to display the flag. Perhaps they want to remember the lives of Confederate soldiers lost in the war. Others believe the flag represents ‘Christian Heritage’ and ‘Freedom’. However, I firmly believe that the Confederate Flag should not be flown over state buildings, especially places where many people gather. The flag is offensive to many African American and isn’t difficult to see why. Some consider the Confederate Flag a symbol of the most terroristic and oppressive period in the history of Black people in America. Placing a symbol many consider offensive in a public gathering place may cause conflict. In addition to this, by raising the Confederate Flag, the state of South Carolina loses many would be visitors that might have gone to South Carolina to see it’s rich heritage but are turned off because they are offended by the Confederate Flag. And it’s just as predictable that the KKK would rally around the Confederate flag on the South Carolina Statehouse grounds in the midst of a push to take it down. This isn’t about rallying for the Confederate flag, it's about rallying for what the flag represents for the Klan, which is what it represented for Charleston shooter Dylan Roof. In rallying around the flag, the Ku Klux Klan will be rallying around Roof, a man who murdered nine Americans for simply being black. He did the same kind of racist violence the group has always done, and the Confederate flag just happens to be one of their…

Ultimately, after the end of the civil war the confederate flag was given a negative connotation and associated with slavery. This is due to this reason that I believe that it should be taken down. The first reason, why I believe it should be taken down is because the confederate flag it sends a message of hate. In documents 1 and 2 governor of South Carolina, Nikki haley, says that she will not tolerate any of the hate being brought upon by the confederate flag. Even though the Confederate flag represents a time of succession, the flag still has other representations; therefore, we shouldn’t ban/nor take down the flag because it is a battle flag but there are still some people who believe it is racist/hateful. First off, there were many official flags, but the Confederate battle flag was never one of them. There was the Stars and Bars flag. Another official flag was the Stainless Banner flag. The Civil War or “War between the states” (page 26) is a historical American event like no other that has been over for nearly 150 years. Most Americans are under the notion the Civil War is over and done with where, other Americans believe the war is still being fought today. In Tony Horwitz’s book “Confederates in the Attic” he explores the impact the American Civil War has on the modern day south, and just why southerners in particular still care so much about the Civil War? After reading “Confederates in the Attic” I believe there are a three main reasons the south still cares about the Civil War so much. They are defending southern pride and heritage, a way of defying against the federalist north, and an escape from ones everyday life.…

The Confederate battle flag was originally flown over the battlefields in which the confederates fought on while battling the North. This flag stood distinguishing a line between the two to be able to tell the South from the North. For many the flag gave many soldiers the feeling that they were fighting for a good cause while the South was trying to succeed from the North.…

The confederate colors should not be limited by the government in any way, but to no avail the government is attempting to take our rights to these historic colors away. To take this right away is a strict violation of the first amendment; “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” Many…

America's current battle with racism is an unfortunate example of when history "repeats itself." The issues regarding racial inequality were confronted in the Civil War, then again during the Reconstruction era. Despite the efforts of both these events, racial conflicts still exist today. The Civil war is taught in schools to be the conflict that ended with the abolishment of slavery. While this marked a turning point in American history, racist belief systems did not disappear.…

Introduction The American Civil war occurred during the years 1861 – 1865, and as stated in the article titled “The Civil War”, it “was the cauldron that created modern America. The war preserved the Union, ending the possibility of the American nation dividing into two or more separate countries, in the process altering the nations politics and government, creating a strong presidency and an increasingly important federal infrastructure” (Finkelman sec. 1) However, the American Civil War did not come without coast, as wars never do, an estimated 620,000 men lost their lives in the line of duty. One of the many, yet major causes of this war, came about through slavery; and the standpoint that the northern states took, wanting to abolish slavery,…
