Argumentative Essay: Should We Have Two Years Of College?

Who wouldn't want two years of free college? From a personal standpoint, it sounds fantastic; however, it would not be in the best interest of hard-working American citizens. Any person who does not have their first two years of college documented would be able to go to college for free. It is much bigger than just the high school graduating seniors. The issue of free college would affect every U.S. citizen with a high school diploma or GED, that wishes to continue their education; regardless of their age or income. The U.S. Government should not pay for American citizens' first, two years of college. Reasons for this would be increased taxes, a sense of entitlement, and the devaluation of the college degree.
For instance, if the U.S. Government were the sole source of paying for the first, two years of college, it will create a huge tax burden on all American taxpayers. Where would the money come from? The money would come from every taxpaying citizen. Not only would free college create a huge tax burden on American taxpayers, it would also create problems for the students wishing to further their education. The funds allocated for grants and financial aid would be diminished, causing a burden on students that could keep them from affording the four-year degree they seek. Continued privileges given without working for them leads to a perceived notion that life owes them something: a reward, success, or a certain grade.
