Should Marijuana be Legal? Marijuana has been a feared and hated drug amongst Americans all over the country. Many people try to stay away from this potentially dangerous drug. Thousands of people are arrested each year because of this drug. But what if legalizing marijuana could be a good thing? It may seem crazy, but making marijuana legal could possibly make society better in different ways.
When people hear the word marijuana, they think of crime, gangs, and overall a very bad problem across the globe. And they would be right. The ACLU, or the American Civil Liberties Union, has concluded that nearly 52% of drug arrests made in 2010 were caused by marijuana. Now, that may be a large number, …show more content…
Barth Wilsey, MD, a pain medicine specialist at the University of California Davis Medical Center, claims that patients with severe pain from long term conditions such as nerve damage, glaucoma, or even cancer, have been prescribed medical marijuana to relieve symptoms such as nerve pain. People would figure out ways to get more marijuana, and possibly eventually get so addicted that they would grow illegal cannabis and lead to more crime. Not only that, but the constant usage of marijuana can damage a person physically, and mentally. Scientists at the NIDA, or National Institute on Drug Abuse, have uncovered some of the short and long term effects of marijuana usage that would affect a person’s way of life. Some short term effects can include loss of memory, altered sense of time, impaired body movement, difficulty in problem solving, and many others. Some long term effects can include reduced, or slowed, brain development, which can lead to a person having difficulty learning, and overall lowering their IQ. Studies that have been conducted in New Zealand led by researchers at Duke University have shown that people within the ages of 13 and 38 who smoked marijuana in their early teens have lost up
