Argumentative Essay: Should Colleges Be Free?

Decent Essays
Some think that colleges should be free, but others disagree. I am one of the people who disagree. Colleges should not be free. They should not be free because it would increase taxes a lot, people would be less serious about their education if it were free, and if everyone had the same level of experience, then it would make it even harder to get a job.
One reason I think college should not be free is that it would increase taxes. For example, according to aei.org, “Shifting costs from students to taxpayers is not the same as making higher education more cost-effective.” This shows that because colleges will still need money, if we make them free, the taxes would go up tremendously.
Another reason I think college should not be free is that

Having grad school tuition free would eventually devalue that degree, making all schooling an endless circle of receiving pointless pieces of paper after graduating while costing tax payers a fortune for it. If our country wants to keep the value in a degree, then making college tuition free is not the way to go about it. College debt isn't usually seen as a benefit to anyone. But in a way it is. Having debt and learning how to manage money and successfully pay it off is a very important skill that will come much into play in a students future life.…

College Should Be Free Bob Samuels in his article claims that all public higher education should be free, and the policy even could save money for our country. Samuels states that everyone who studies in colleges or universities is paying more right now than what they actually need for school; as a result, it causes low graduation rates for schools. Also, Samuels states that the reason why students drop out of higher education is that they cannot afford the higher cost of tuition, so making public higher education free is necessary. If many students go to colleges, fewer people would be unemployed and in need of governmental assistance, therefore our government can save more money for other needed services. What’s more is that Samuels thinks…

In the article we learn about the good things in having a free community college as well as the negative parts of it. Although there is many opinions to both sides my opinion and the side I am choosing is that a community college should not be free. I believe a community college shouldn’t be free because it's unfair for those who attend a 4 year university and have to pay the double amount of what a community college is normally. In the article Michele Siqueiros says “The promise of free tuition cold make the problem worse by drawing more students to already crowded…

Imagine a world where furthering an education after high school was simple and obtaining a degree was free. That would be every college student’s dream, right? Unfortunately, today colleges do not just let students walk out clear from any debt. Whether an individual is going to a four-year university or a two-year school, it is going to be rather costly in the end. Before deciding to go to Rowan College at Burlington County, I had hopes of attending a regular four-year school.…

While I applaud some of his points, in general I disagree; I think that free college is vital. Not only important, but necessary. He argues that shifting the financial responsibility from the prospective student to the taxpayers doesn’t solve the problems of access, and that the functional capabilities of higher education would be restrained by public goodwill. He points out that collegiate success might actually deteriorate in the face of this. He summarizes it well: “The key question, then, is what happens if public generosity does not keep pace with rising college costs, increases in demand, or both?”…

Though, this solution that seems to do all good still has negatives. Just like its opposing argument why college should not be free has various points which support its claims but there are also reasons why it is not an entirely good decision as well. This is why college should neither be free or extremely expensive but it should be cheaper so that more students will have the opportunity to go to college and the students going already won’t have to deal with the insane price of an…

“If higher education at public schools becomes free, it might appear to devalue a college diploma. It might also lead to students cutting more classes or not trying because they don’t have to “get their money’s worth” when they aren’t paying for anything. The current price of college drives students to complete their schooling as quickly as possible so as to reduce debt. Without that financial drive, we might see more laziness and lackadaisical behavior from our students” (College Raptor). College would just be like high school everyone would go through it to be able to at least get a job.…

Why College Should be Free for Everyone One of the things people think of when they think about college is the cost of attending. Many people I know, peers and parents alike, are going or have gone to college with the intention of using loans to attain the ultimate goal, their degree. If America is so progressive, then why hasn’t the cost of college been lowered instead of going up yearly? College should not force people to go into debt for the majority of their lives to get a degree.…

Should college education be free for all U.S. citizens? How are free universities in Germany and other European countries benefiting these countries and students? Imagine how the U.S. would benefit from free college education. How many more students we would have that actually finish college and not only that, but don’t have a huge debt to pay back afterwards. Other than the fact that yes, if there was free college less students would take it as a joke like if it were high school.…

To attain a higher education, it should not be extremely difficult and it shouldn’t be financially burdening to those who have the drive and ambition to increase their knowledge and better their future. College does indeed cost a lot; however, expensive tuition is not an incentive to make college free. Andrew Kelly, the director of the Center on Higher Education Reform at American Enterprise Institute (AES) says that free college would lead to an increase in taxes and because of the increase in enrollments, the cost to implement this policy would increase even more (The New York Times). He also states that “Rather than spread scarce federal money across all students, policymakers should instead target those resources toward those who need it most” (The New York Times). In other words, tuition-free education should only be an option to those who need it, not those who are able to afford…
