Actually, the United States of America holds one of the lowest graduation rates in the world and continues to set a global standard for inefficiency. American writer, publisher, artist, and philosopher Elbert Hubbard said, “You can lead a boy to college, but you cannot make him think.” Meaning, if college were free it wouldn’t necessarily change graduation rates. In life, there are differences between needs and wants. For example, you need clothes, but you want designer clothes. Ordinary clothes are donated or bought cheap, but people have to pay big bucks for designer clothes. This concept is the same for college. College is a want. Public school is free and if you want college, you must pay. The first United States college was made in the 1600s. People got along just fine before these times. There are hundreds of people who made it big and succeeded without college. This just proves college is a want, not a need. If you want to go to college you should work for it. Will Smith said, “If you want it, go get it. Period.” People claim to want college so much, but aren’t willing to do the work. College is a serious thing. A big fear of college being free is how serious the students would actually take it. These days, going to college is “the right thing to do,” and if you do not go, you get generalized into a group of “failures.” This way of thinking is way wrong and is one of the biggest reasons college should not be free.
