Theme is an important idea throughout any story that teaches readers an important lesson or moral when they take the time to investigate it. Rudyard Kipling wrote the great story, “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi”, with an underlying theme of, if you help others you will obtain help in return. Rikki, the protagonist, helps people and is recompensated with help in return. On the other hand, Nagaina helps no one and faces not getting help. This story proves that helping people can pay off, and I look forward to justifying the theme. Another possible theme could be, we must honor our family. To start, Rikki helped Darzee and his family by standing up to Nag, scolding him and telling him that eating the eggs was wrong. In return, Darzee’s wife distracted Nagaina for Rikki by pretending she had a broken wing so that Nagaina would follow her and Rikki could steal the baby cobras. The kind and brave Rikki also helped the family that lived in the house by protecting them from the snakes; Rikki received support from the big Englishman as stated in the text, “fired both barrels of a shotgun.” This shows that Rikki was in the process of killing Nag when the Big Man helped him. The last person Rikki helped was Chuchundra, “There’s not the least danger.” said Rikki. Rikki said this to give Chuchundra courage to explore the middle of the floor, something he was afraid to do. Chuchundra gave aid to Rikki by helping him hear the snakes’ plan, “Can’t you hear, Rikki-Tikki?” said Chuchundra.
