The NFL remains in the spotlight regarding their commitment and contribution to players’ safety. In recent years, the league has been under immense pressure to take the issue of brain injuries more seriously. Initiatives of $20 million in 2015 and $100 million in 2016 have been announced by the NFL to be directing towards diagnosing traumatic injury and developing advanced materials and technology that will prevent head injuries. Riddell, the largest helmet manufacturer and the official helmet provider for the NFL, is introducing its newest helmet, the SpeedFlex. The new attribute of a cantilever allows the helmet to remain flex while maintaining an overall stiffness. It also uses a ratcheting system that locks the helmet into place and a facemask that assists in shifting the force away from the head. The SpeedFlex was tested in several locations and early results were said to be positive. Many players believe that the NFL simply does not value defence as much as it should because all the rule changes over the years were made to protect quarterbacks and receivers. On the other hand, a major weakness in helmets is that they do not protect from any twisting or torsion motion, which is a major cause of concussions. Most importantly, there is limited evidence about the effectiveness of protective equipment in reducing concussions and other head-related injuries.
