On June 17, 2015, Twenty-one year old Dylann Roof entered into the Emanuel AME Church and slaughtered nine African Americans (Bacon, 2015). While Roof was committing this heinous act, he was shouting racial slurs at his victims. Previous to this massacre, Roof had written what he called a “white supremacist manifesto”, claiming that he had “no choice” but to target African-Americans because he viewed them as “stupid and violent”. Videos have surfaced of Roof’s manifesto, and in it, he is seen with the Confederate flag as his background, attempting to further portray that he was a white supremacist. While this action was indeed horrible and is unforgivable in some people’s minds, the Confederate flag did not condone or give permission to his actions. Once again, as in the cases of the Ku Klux Klan and the Dixiecrat party, the Confederate flag has been twisted to a person or a group’s sick mentality, and the purpose and vision of the flag has been further
