Capital punishment is an intolerable denial of civil liberties and is inconsistent with the fundamental values of the United States of America's democratic system. The death penalty is uncivilized in theory, and also unjust, and inequitable in practice. Many people strive to prevent executions and seek the elimination of capital punishment, because of its lack of effectiveness towards deterring crime. The death penalty is not a feasible form of crime control. When police chiefs were asked to position the factors that, in their judgment, reduce the rate of violent major crime, they mentioned such things as curbing use of narcotics, and putting more officers patrolling the street, longer sentences and working on gun control and regulations. They ranked the death penalty as least effective of all these different factors. Politicians who preach the desirability of executions as a method of crime control deceive the public and mask their own malfunction to identify and confront the true causes of major crimes in the United States. An execution is a violent public spectacle of official homicide, and one that endorses killing to solve social problems, the worst possible example to set for the citizenry, and especially children who are growing up in a media centered world, where now more than ever news is available to anyone. The benefits of capital punishment are illusory, but the mayhem that comes with any court case that deals with the death penalty, and the resulting destruction of community decency are very real in today's world. …show more content…
