What exactly is a popular sovereignty? Popular sovereignty is a belief that the authority of the government is created by the will of its people. Actually, John Locke was one of the first to reveal the idea of popular sovereignty after Benjamin Franklin structuralized it. Franklin wanted to use it as a frame for an act of separation during the British monarchy. The popular sovereignty also links to the Declaration of Independence because they both have the same idea that, all men are equal and have the right to: Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. The advantages show that if we as citizens are careful and manage popular sovereignty, then everyone can have their opinion heard. However there are also a few disadvantages of popular sovereignty. For example it runs on the determination of majority. There are always going to be people that disagree with a choice that needs to be made. Another example would be that it minimizes the contact in which people have with one another. That becomes a problem because products, opportunities for education, and other services will be limited. These disadvantages should be taken in consideration and not be ignored. Finally, in my opinion, the popular sovereignty is a core democratic value because it allows us to do so many things. We are allowed to have a voice in voting and that right there is something that is cherished by many American citizens. This being a core democratic value, is very important and holds our nation together like the binding of a book. The power of the government comes from the people means that we are able to take stand in our government and speak our minds, have opinions, and be heard. It's important for the government to be for the people and by the people in order to be
