Argumentative Essay On Why Spiders Are Better Than People

Spiders Are Better Than People A recent study concluded that 30.5 % of Americans have arachnophobia, the fear of spiders. With this percentage, there must be a reason why so many grown men and women shriek in terror at the sight of these spindly-legged creatures. Well, not really. In actuality, spiders are not something to be feared. Spider's are helpful to us in many ways, killing pests, having venom can be used in medicine, and in honesty they don’t harm people as much as we harm them. There are many who think spider bites are the worst possible bug bite, but that isn’t true. Not many spiders can actually pierce the human skin, and there are barely any that have strong enough venom to have a negative impact on our body. In fact, scientists …show more content…
Thousands of people have shivers run up their spine at the sight of an insect, or scream bloody murder if one flies in a close proximity of them. What if there was a way to get rid of those terrifying centipedes and unforgiving hornets? There is! Spiders are one house guest everyone should want to have. Spiders don’t like to be near humans, and they aren’t there to antagonize anything bigger than them. The only reason they want to be in a home is to eat the other bugs. It’s true, they will bite if they feel extremely threatened, but that’s nothing to fear. "I've been handling spiders for almost 20 years, and I've never been bitten," Chris Buddle, an arachnologist at McGill University in Montreal told LiveScience. "You really have to work to get bitten by a spider, because they don't want to bite you." Not only that, but only about a dozen of the 40,000 spiders discovered on earth can inflict serious harm on the average human. In North America, there are only two spiders that can harm humans: the Brown Recluse and the Black Widow spiders. Fortunately, these spiders tend to stay in dark places such as cellars and avoid humans at all costs. The vast majority of "spider bites" are caused by something else, research shows. One study Rick Vetter, a retired arachnologist, cited found that out of 182 Southern California patients seeking treatment for spider bites, only 3.8 percent had actual spider bites, while 85.7 percent had infections not related to spiders. “In the vast majority of cases,” Vetter stated, “spiders are our friends.” Spiders save people, they eliminate bugs and overall, they aren’t as much of a threat as everyone claims they are. Spiders aren’t as big of a threat as we think they are. For being one of the most beneficial bugs to us, why should we be afraid of
