Argumentative Essay On Whales In Captivity

Decent Essays
Did you know 163 whales have died in captivity, not including stillborn or miscarried calves. Whales in captivity are a big problem. I disagree with whales in captivity for these reasons, Against their nature, Torture, and Unhealthy.

First of all, it’s against their nature. The most popular captive whale, orcas, would have to swim the circumference of a normal tank in seaworld 1,400 times a day to represent the distance they swim a day in the wild. Also, they don’t have the same life they would have in the wild in a small aquarium. Though some sea parks are saying they are going to build bigger enclosures for the captive whales, that still won't match up to the wild. Overall, captivity is against their nature.

Why Orcas Should Not Be Kept in Captivity For many years killer whales have been brutally used in the entertainment industry. These mammals are not only being used for public display, but are being treated unfairly. Instead of being left alone in the wild as they should be, they are being taken away not only from their homes but from their family. Many people may not know this, but behind closed doors at the various Seaworld's, located all over the country, these creatures are being held and “cared for” in unsafe barbarous water tanks.…

Orcas have been stuck in captivity since the mid-1900s. They were first captured from their ocean environment and moved to tanks that were small and modified for their conditions. John Hargrove a former SeaWorld trainer said, “...I was thrilled to be apart of the orcas’ lives for so long, I finally came to the realization that if I had to live their lives, it would be hell. Captivity is always captivity, no matter how gentle the jailer”(9). That is why, regardless of their ultimate fate, orcas should never, under any circumstance be bred, raised, or kept in captivity.…

Why Seaworld’s Orcas Should Remain In Captivity Many people may argue that it is wrong for Seaworld to take orcas from the ocean and their families, but seaworld hasn’t captured a wild orca since the late 1970s for anything other than for rehabilitation purposes! The controversy over Seaworld’s captive orcas has been going on for decades. Seaworld ended its iconic orca shows due to the massive outcry of the public. Many feel that these animals have a right to be free, but others believe that releasing the orcas would mean certain death. Captive orcas should not be freed despite the outcry of the public; if they were to be freed, they would be socially isolated, they would not know how to survive on their own, and they wouldn’t be used to the ocean’s environment.…

Have you ever seen those cute little Whales doing tricks at places like seaworld? Has it ever crossed your mind that these whale could be hurting in that show bizz life? The thing is these creatures are way to smart, large, and very complex to be put in a small environment. The injuries that some people know of are from the trainers, but some don't even hear about the animal's injuries. Orcas should not be in captivity because they get injured, don't have enough room to swim, and don't live as long as they would in the wild.…

At least 161 orcas have died in captivity at Seaworld due to the small enclosures and dangerous training. Seaworld is a marine resort that captives water related animals such as orcas, dolphins, and flamingos. They train the animals to put on shows and do tricks that they would never naturally do. Tilikum, a 22 foot, 12,500 pound orca, was captured in November of 1983 when he was just a calf. Trainer Keltie Byrne was pulled to the bottom of a tank by Tilikum and drowned.…

This is America’s largest zoo, yet this is only one the 142 accredited zoos across America, this may seem like a lot, but America only has a handful of zoos compared to the 414 zoos located in Germany. “I heard virtually nothing that would educate people about killer whales in the wild, how long they live, their social bonds, their hunting patterns, and ways to conserve their threatened natural habitats”. In conclusion, killer whales should not be held in captivity because the whales are not happy, too intelligent for confined living spaces, and Seaworld does not provide the educational value the park claims to…

So, is captivity good for the orcas? Despite the fact that millions of people go to SeaWorld every year to see the killer whales, the animals are actually mistreated. If SeaWorld doesn’t change their ways, then orcas shouldn’t be in captivity any longer. Four powerful arguments prove that captivity is not suitable for orcas. First, orcas in captivity are very unpredictable.…

Killer whales have been kept in captivity since 1961 and at least 165 orcas have died in captivity, not including 30 miscarried or stillborn calves. Dozens of wild orcas are plucked from their families and forced to live in artificial social groupings. There are currently a total of 60 orcas held in captivity in many entertainment parks. “While the whales have been spotted with rake marks caused by tankmates' teeth, and a host of serious injuries caused by fighting, Fischbeck confirmed just how regular - and severe - the fighting could get” (Schelling). People began capturing whales for entertainment purposes in the late 1960’s.…

From zoos, to aquariums, to petting zoos, and even our own pets, humans have always been fascinated by animals, and have gone to certain extents to use them for learning purposes, preservation, survival, companionship, and occasionally entertainment. Menageries allow people to learn about animals from a safe distance and see some animals which they would never have seen if it were not for wildlife parks. Many argue that captive animals are not happy in their environment, and should be set free from zoos in their natural habitat. Although many find captivity cruel and unnecessary, having animals in captivity is beneficial to our society as well as to captive animals because when done right, endangered species are protected and well taken care of, people are able to experience beautiful wildlife,…

Whaling has been a controversial activity for some years now. Whales in today’s society have been regarded as “gentle giants” and highly intelligent animals, which is true. Some nations however, such as the Norwegian and Japanese have whaling deeply rooted in their culture and history. For many centuries, their ancestors took part in whaling as a means to sustain their life, livelihood and culture. I agree with the Norwegian and Japanese position on permitting the hunting of non-endangered species of whales as a cultural exemption, given that the hunting of the whales is regulated to prevent over-hunting so that the whale population can replenish.…
