In We Were Liars by E.lockhart, Cadence is crazy because she could not remember how her three best friends died. She hallucinates that her friends are still alive, and she feels emotions towards them. She even engages in conversations with them. Eventually, Cadence remembers how she killed the Liars and feels guilty because she could have tried to save them. The Liars were not justified for the burning of Clairmont because their plan was to get rid of all of the arguments between the three aunts, and while they did, they weren't successful in the crime because three of the Liars died.
