Oil is an important industry and has helped societies develop and continue growing. While oil has always been used as a source of energy, the oil industry exploded in the United States shortly after the Great Depression and WWII. That industry continues to grow today and supplies millions of people with jobs around the world. The water industry also supplies people with jobs in their processing factories. In a article titled GreenRoots: Water vs Oil, it is estimated “over 100 billion is spent annually on bottled water.” You may ask yourself, “If so much is spent on bottled water every year then why is there a shortage of drinkable water?” There is a multitude of factors. The growing population, the water bottle industry, global warming, and the extreme usage of water supplies are just some of the known factors affecting the fresh drinkable water shortages. Jean Chrétien, former Canadian prime minister and co-chair of the InterAction Council said “Using water the way we have in the past simply will not sustain humanity in future.” Water shortages are also caused by people who overuse water. For example, when you leave the water on when you are brushing your teeth or taking long showers. This waste filtered drinkable water.
